Robby22
went rifle shopping yesterday, and have pretty much made my mind up that i want a browning, however first gun i saw was a brand new a-bolt, already screwcut, synthetic stock etc. just shy of 600-gun only. The second gun i saw was a browning eurobolt, s/h, wood stock, but looked in good condition-gun only 350. Now im working on a budget of about 600-700, maybe 800, and i want a leupold 3-9 x 50 which retails at 250-300 in a couple of shops around my way, also need to buy mounts, and ammo, plus mod (but doesnt have to be straight away). So my question is-do i buy the eurobolt and full setup for my budget, or should i save an buy the new a-bolt? the guy with the eurobolt in stock-said if barrel was knacked i could bring it back? are they the seem gun with different asthetics? any feedback appreciated! Baldrick
I'd buy a new A-Bolt, some decent Warne rings and bases and a good second-hand European scope. You can pick up a decent scope off fleabay, or from a dealer (York Guns, McLeods of Tain etc) for £300.
JRDS
I would not go for a Leupold. Buy a SH Hungarian Schmidt.
Oly
I would go for the A-bolt. Then depending on what your using the rifle for, I would then choose my scope...but Leupolds are a very good choice particularly if you want variable mag & parallax adj. harv
personal preference i have owned both and think the leupolds are superior to schmidts whether hungarian or german. i currently have a leupold mk4 8.5-25-50 on my steyr and have yet to look thru a scope with better optics. please forward me unwanted zeiss swarovski us optics etc to prove me wrong
Baldrick
Harv, In the interests of a healthy and constructive debate: You can't have looked through an S&B PMII, a Swaro Z6 or a USO scope and say that Leupold is better. I know that the Yank military loves the Mk4. I used Leupold Mk4s in the military - the Small Arms School Corps is constantly trialling glass for infantry weapons. From personal experience and testing on a like-for-like basis, Leupold glass does not compare favourably to European glass. I have a Leupy VX-7 and a VX-III in my cabinet at present, but they do not sit equal to the S&B and Zeiss scopes I also own and use on a daily basis. The European glass appears to me to give significantly better contract, clarity and resolution.
Dunkield
Pretty well says it all, but scopes are a very personal thing . . And not even a mention of fussy eye relief yet
harv
baldrick, i have looked thru all you have mentioned on more than 1 occasion as stated it is personal preference everybody is different that is what makes a good forum and discussion, you have obviously never yourself looked thru a mk4 as they are far superior to the leupold glass you have. Dunkield
I have, in fact I brought one back from the US for another forum member. They are very good, but they are still not up with the European stuff. The owner of that scope bought a Z6 a few months ago, when he could easily have bought another Leupold. Baldrick
Harv, I've not only looked through a Mk4, I carried a weapon wearing a Mk4 for quite some time when I was in the Forces. I lived with that scope every day. I looked through about 30 different versions of the Mk4 over a period of many months, whilst trialling the scopes. The US Army's marksmen regularly have their ***** handed to them by the British snipers when competing against each other. We have the best rifle (L96) sporting some of the best glass made (Hensoldt, now being replaced by S&.
