Gonna Shoot a Wabbit
Hi all. Well the last hurray of the season, after a tentative agreement from don yes he is coming(weather report threatening rain, and don does hate the rain) we a have full car. your humble scribe is of course in attendance, don , YTS , and YTS good lady wife too. We leave home for 0700 with YTS good lady astonished that there are two 6 o'clocks in a day HA HA, next with a complete selection of hats to choose from ranging from an alpine bobble, pink fluffy wooly hat (don was getting interested now), flat cap and various other garments to avoid the dreaded chill on ones bonce. However the glamour she adds to the occasion more than makes up for the drastic increase in ferreting accessories. We arrive in wales for 0815 and set off for the 1st set in a large wood 1/2 a mile from the car. On the way stopped to admire the scenery and took a snap to share with you. Well off we go, we are expecting to struggle today and at the first sign of of the baby bunnies (tennis ball on legs size)bolting we will move onto another set. We net up a couple of small 4 holers but no bunnies at home. I next move onto a 15-20hole set. Quickly netted up and one of the albino assasins entered. Almost straight away the sub teranean rumbling began that announced bunnies at home . WHOOOSH a bunny bolted in front of me and cleanly netted, whilst admistering the coup de grace, WHOOOSH to my right and another bunny cleanly netted. With two in the bag YTS arrived and posted his poley to assist with any bunnies rumbling around in this biggish set. After a few minutes with no more bolts my albino surfaced so i posted her into a little 4 holer nearby, she was down for a few minutes and WHOOOSH No3 cleanly netted and added to the bag. With lunchtime fast approaching we net up a series of 10 - 15 holers. It didn't take long before the tennis balls started popping out the whisper goes round as soon as the ferrets surface grab 'em. Thankfully my albino rattled a few small bunnies then surfaced to be boxed up quickly. We had a light drizzle of rain fall for the next 1/2 hour i could hear don's teeth grating from the other side of the wood . YTS's poley however had a wonderful time for 15 minutes terrorizing every small bunny in the area. Thankfully without catching any, she eventually surfaced to be boxed up and we moved on. We netted up a small set near the car and winkled out another bunny, alas we lost a bunny too (out of a net YTS had set i hasten to add.) A last set before the car yielded another 1 to give us 5 before lunch. Praise the lord it has stopped raining and don still has some teeth left. A quick change of venue and hasty netting up of a few small sets in a copse most of wich had no bunnies at home, However stop the press YTS's good lady is pitched into the fray when a bunny bolts near her. She wrestles said netted bunny to the ground for YTS to deal with and resets the nets EXCELLENT . With 6 in the bag we stop for lunch. which i am pleased to say consisted of the usual bacon and lincolnshire sausages on cheese and onion topped barms (sod the diet). Suitably refreshed and cholesterol charged (burp!) we moved on with the afternoon drawing on. Next was another small wood. After a few fruitless sets with no bunnies at home, team YTS net up a 10 holer and post their poley. YTS whispers he can hear rumbling........ WHOOOSHH!! bunny bolts near YTS's good lady who in keeping with all good ferreters gets tunnel vision and dives through some undergrowth with branches whizzing past her ears to grab said netted bunny. Well Done! With 7 in the bag and 2.30pm approaching we have all of the ferrets out and call it a day. A most enjoyable end to the day and season with a few bunnies in the bag, in splendid company and did you all notice .....................NO DIGGING!!!!! WOO HOO!!! YTS's good lady was a welcome asset to the team and in her first outing with us has already amassed more ferreting knowledge than YTS has in the last couple of years (useless trainee)......may leave him at home next time HA HA HA. In the words of bugs bunny th'th'th'thats all folks, until the autumn anyway. Hope you enjoy the pics and thanks for reading. rgds. Ferret Master
Good write up. In my experience the female ferreter can be every bit as useful as the male providing they don;t suffer from cute bunny syndrome. I have had experiences of both types while ferreting this season. We had our last day the other day too when tennis ball sized babies started emerging. FM
