Big_Sam
I was poking around on the net looking at some of the new military rounds being used, namely the 4.6x30mm (H&K) and the 5.7x28mm (FN). Are there any normal rifles chambered for this round? It looks like a great round for being basically a reloadable HMR. 5.7x28mm --Bullets in the FN version are normal 40gn vmax .224, so easy enough to find, 1,950fps, 390ft/lb energy. 4.6x30mm - H&K version, 24gn 2,378fps 312ft/lb 4.6mm RUAG also just brought out a new version, the 347ft/lb version. It looks like either of those would be a good comprimise for those who like the .17HMR, but like to be able to load their own.
Devilishdave
The MP7 uses the 4.6x30 I beleive this is going to come in for general use by RMP in the future. Dave
Big_Sam
Indeed, but we can't really buy a H&K MP7 over here....

casts_by_fly
sam, I considered the FN round, except necked down to either 20 or 17 cal. I can get barrels for my Encore in those chamberings which would replace my HMR. But, if you are going to do that why now just get a 17 hornet? 10 grains of powder and 3500 fps. You can load it down to HMR velocities if you like. Same with the standard FN round. Load down a 223 to those levels. I don't know of any sporting arms chambered in those rounds. You can get 'defense' arms in them and you can get custom barrels chambered in them. Thanks, Rick
Wookie
The FN and the MP7 are both lovely little weapons. Had a play with them last year (under the eyes of the salesmen) and they handled well and (apparently) can go through just about any body armour at a long distance. I can't see myself wanting to get one for rabbits though...
casts_by_fly
wookie, The FMJ ammo will go through things, as will a 223 or 308 FMJ. If you hand load though, you can get all of the standard diameter bullets. If you neck it down to .172" it is a reloadable (and slightly more powerful) HMR. As I said though, might as well get a 17 AH and down load it to HMR levels if that is what you want. Then you can upload it to higher power as needed. njc110381
.17AH seems the way to go if you want something like this
Dirty Harry
I have played with but not shot the MP7. It feels really cheep and nasty. Its all plastic. I believe the rounds are steel not lead so will pass through most stuff. Harry
Wookie
But Harry, it's H&K! It's a Rolls Royce of military firearms! Have you played with the G36? That's the same. I hate the plastic mag and some of the bits on it just look wrong. Thinking about it though, most of the modern weapons look and feel the same (to an extent). SA80 - looks tacky and plastic M4A1 - Looks plastic and tacky G36 - looks a bit plastic and tacky P90 - looks plastic and weird I can't think of anything but the AK47 that has wood on and even the new versions don't come with it. dunganick
theres a feq interesting rounds about, have a look here: http://www.accuratereloading.com/reload.html some of these are unusual, but still have brass avalible so you wont need to form your own. One i personally want to try is a 221 fireball. Its a pistol cartridge i believe, only one production gun that i know of (remington), however a rebarreled .222 will work fine. One day. Theres a fair few unusual cartridges out there, i probably wouldnt recomend anything which is too odd, as you will spend most of your life trying to get componenets for it, or making the brass. possibly an AI cartridge? Paul223
.17AH seems the way to go if you want something like this B) I have to agree and hope to start building mine soon  was kind of hoping to find a hornet in the auction on sat but nothing in the catalogue, so I'll have to keep looking
casts_by_fly
paul, what action are you looking to built it on? I've heard of a lot of guys using the CZ hornet and rebarreling to 17 AH. Same with the Ruger 77/22 hornet. Mine will be a barrel for my encore. Just swap the barrel and good to go. Just need to subsidize it... Thanks, Rick

Thanks, Rick I stupidly missed a nice sako in .22 hornet going for cheap money because it had a little cosmetic damage but yes that's the plan to do a re barrel. subsidizing is always the problem
