Catamong
The ground is just off the Risby (NOT BARROW) exit on the A14, it's nowhere near as interesting a ground as High Lodge, used to be run by John Dyson, (who organises and sets the Essex Masters layout), but now run by the Frankham family. A small, dank & tired looking clubhouse, alongside a disgusting portadunny, with a burger van adjacent, so don't expect Haute Cuisine. He usually puts on 10 stands of 10, and some very high scores get shot there, (usually won with a 96 / 97), and this time the layout will be a little bit more akin to the beloved Essex straw bale shoots. There's a small tower that usually catches most people out as he tends to put on a very fast crosser that needs a bus load of lead, there's usually a couple of tricky longish birds down the bottom of the field, so don't take anything for granted. On your current form you should do an 85, so good luck with the team. Cat.
Mungler
Cat, I don't know how the selection process works. You are supposed to submit your two best scores, but a hay bale score against a High Lodge score seems harsh? How does it work? Link to the Essex CPSA bit here : http://www.essexcpsa.co.uk/results/ESSEXSPORTINGTEAM08.pdf It should be run on points away from the winning score, i.e. shoot won with 95, you shoot 85, you get 10 points. Lowest combined scores off best 2 shoots to count, although that's not what it says on their website so it looks like you have to put your highest scores in off the 2 shoots. Don't get me wrong, Barrow's no "Straw Baler", but there are liable to be a few more "gimme's" there than you shot at High Lodge. Unless, of course he toughens it up on the day, or the wind blows, it is a bit exposed up there, unlike High Lodge. You shouldn't need to book in at Barrow, as it won't be squadded, just turn up and pay your money. Cat.

Catamong
Elvis, Look on the CPSA website for membership fees, I'm afraid you have to be a member if you want to achieve anything in this sport, (beware...., incoming exocet from Suffolk). You'll have to cut down on those fags, scratchcards & loose women. Cat.
Stu S
Seems that i may run into this infamous essex mafia then. Barrow is my local shoot! I believe it's the East Anglian Champs as well? Either way, I tend to arrive at 11am in time for coffee and bacon roll before shooting, so if you see me, you can buy If anyone is unsure about where to go, drop me a PM and I'll either give you my number for directions, or I'll drop you a PM or something! Evil Elvis
You'll have to cut down on those fags, scratchcards & loose women. i dont smoke!!! Its not that i want to "achieve" rather than try different venues etc, my shooting has come on leaps in the last year but i dont think Im Essex squad fodder just yet lol. Mungler
Stu, Can you stick some directions up on here from the A12 to Barrow. We should meet up at the same time and shoot it together. I would prefer shooting straight off as soon as it opens - means we get to miss the A12 traffic and any clogging up round the stands. What time does it open and what time does it close? Yesterday was tight, the ground had a 12.30 p.m. cut off (absolute deadline) and we didn't finish until 12.15 p.m. ish Andy Edited March 10, 2008 by Mungler
Catamong
The ground normally opens at 9.00, I very often will get there by 8.30 for a cuppa then perhaps a go on the pool to warm up. The upside to shooting early is that you can shoot round quickly, which can be good if you're on a bit of a roll, as you've got the adrenalin going with no time to dwell on last targets, also the weather conditions can often be kinder first thing, with less wind to worry about. There is a downside, as sometimes you will be first to shoot a stand, and will not have the benefit of seeing the targets shot by others first. I personally wouldn't look to arrive at 11.00, as you will be waiting big time on virtually every stand, if you can't make first thing then leave it till later on, last entries are 3.00pm. Cat. Mungler
I would aim to be there for 8.30 a.m. to beat the A12 traffic, get in and round and then get back for the rest of the day and avoid a costly divorce.

Thats the trouble with you clay shooters - really you should never miss as its the same bird every time Us real shooters dont get to see where the birds are coming from when you shoot pigeons and we seem to do ok
Stu S
I shall endeavor to sort some directions for you later today! Bit busy this morning! Stu
Stu S
Erm, i just had a look at the fixtures list on the CPSA site, and the Barrow Heath fixtures are showing that this Sunday is the East Anglian Champs, and that next weekend (23rd March) is the Essex selection shoot. Just thought i'd pop that into the discussion! Do you guys know something i don't?!?!?!?! Stu
Mungler
Eh? Not with you there Stu. I am in for and on for 23.3.08 (Sunday).
Catamong
Stu has quite rightly pointed out that according to the CPSA fixtures website, the East Anglian Sporting Champs is being held this Sunday, (16th ), also at Barrow. It's unusual for that ground to have 2 Registered shoots one after the other, probably worth checking with Mike Frankham first? It could be a good warm up event for the 23rd, I may do it myself, (if the woodies are not around in any numbers), as I have other plans for Sunday 23rd. Cat. Mungler
Whehey. You joined the CPSA Martin? Did you pay them in 1 pence pieces or fivers smeared with dog poo? Will sort out travel arrangements in due course - it looks like we have a strong Essex contingent coming.
Stu S
Ok, have a map ready to put up, but don't seem to be able to do it! Anyone help? Stu
Mungler
I am technically deficient but the best thing I find is to up load any photos to Photobucket and then insert the "img" link into the post.
Catamong
From East or West on the A14, take the Risby turn off, (NOT BARROW), which is about 10 miles West of Bury St Edmunds, the ground is adjacent to the A14, and marked "Barrow Heath" in the bottom left hand corner of this map: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=57...p=newsearch.srf The A14 is the dark green road on the map, Risby is on the right hand side. Turn right down a farm type track just as you cross the small railway bridge. Cat. Edited March 11, 2008 by Catamong

Yes I have rejoined the CPSA, one of the clubs I shoot with is trying to get in with them and is asking all members to join. I also want to get an official class even if it is ****. And as Catamong has said you need to be a member to get anywhere in this sport. And while I am shooting reasonably well and enjoying it then hell why not. Every club I shoot at has a different scheme running and only applies to that club, I am AAA at one, A at another and AA at another. I am paying them in corroded old coppers that I pick up off the beach so it may take a while.
