HEAD SHOT
I can not believe they even thought of it in the first place. But then again, this is Britain. The next thing they will try and TAX is the fresh air you breath.

MM
what is so shocking, is that you pay tax on everything apart from bait collected yourself. now DEFRA have turned their attentions to this as well. bloody gordon brown  they reckon that collecting things like razor clams are damaging the environment. if they stopped the asian community collecting them in there thousands, there would be an outcry. Chard
good news for the mackeral bashers nice to see the goverment stopped for a change but they will find another way  they are good like that robbing peter to paul and all that still leaves us carp boys out in the cold There's a lot more to sea angling than Mackerel bashing  Some would say there's a lot more to it than hooking tame pellet pigs out of a gravel pit Good news on the licence - I think that would have been a vote loser of major proportions Edited March 20, 2008 by Chard

berettaman1
As I have said several times on other threads on P W, this Goverment is bankrupt, the stealth taxes being introduced on everything just to Prop up the insane spending on the illegal war in Iraq, paying for the now hundreds of thousands of people wandering into the country, who are being looked after by the state, the selling off of half our gold reserves ,by Gormless Gordon, only for the price of Gold to treble a few weeks later. MP,s expences ,the highest in the world, the closing of Hospital wards all over the country, old peoples homes being closed down. The London Dome folly. cost billions, still costing us. Help. Our only chance is to declare war on America!. then surrender and let them come in and run the place more efficiantly.
Cranfield
The Government (or Defra) realised that they could not offer the recreational sea angler anything for their licence fee. The Commercial Fishing lobby sunk the attempts to get the minimum landing size for bass increased to a sensible level. Other measures, such as a "Golden Mile" proposal, that meant no commercial fishing within a mile of the shore, marine preservation areas, etc., were discussed, but torpedoed by the Commercials. With nothing to offer, there would have been massive "civil disobediance" and the policing of the licence system would have been extremely difficult, given the nature of sea fishing venues. However, I believe this will return in the future, together with bag limits on what you can take home, all wrapped up in another package. There is too much money here available to the Government to be ignored. The freshwater angler (I fish all "disciplines"), gets a lot for our licence fee, the total undivided attention of the Environment Agency who are responsible for the management of all our rivers and canals, plus they are available to still water owners for advice, assistance and stock fish, often at no charge to Clubs. They also police the system, including poaching prevention and the control of the movement of fish.
vole
I detest this govornment for taxing the bejesus out of us but... I have seen many river systems come back to life over 30 years, helped by loss of industry and maybe the EA licence. Not to mention angling organisations with vested interests and legal redress on polluters etc. There is no equivalent to this in sea angling.Sea anglers are not listened to because they cannot stake any claim to the water they fish as can someone who actually has bought into something.Result: there are no fish left . My last trips off Whitby saw the whole boat blank. I do not advocate a fee paid to the government but if sea anglers could organise themselves and have ownership to stand up to polluters and commercial pressures things might improve. Another example is the free fishing in Ireland.River angling has declined because the river systems like the Shannon suffer from pollution as there is no one to fight the corner of the angler. Ferret Master
Jolly good. I wouldn't have bought one anyway as I only sea fish for one week per year so would have objected to having to fork out for one. Guess thats one more proposed law I won't have to break. FM
