jake_
Hello All I’m very new to clay shooting so any help on all topics is greatly appreciated. I read in my beretta instruction book that lead is very harmful to pregnant woman which scared the pants off me as my wife is pregnant. This is our first so we are both trying to get through all the books and advice from friends and family but I can’t find much on lead and pregnancy anywhere. My cartridges are in a zipped bag under the stairs and the gun in the loft. In future I will clean the shotgun outside and my wife does not handle the gun and probably will only come and watch rather than fire it. Now I know it looks like I have taken all precautions above but you can’t blame me for still being concerned. I’m absolutely over the moon that I am going to be a dad but also so worried about things. My wife is still in the early stages so this is the most vulnerable as well Thanks in advance for any help or advice on this!
Chard
For lead to be dangerous, it has to be swallowed, or fumes from melting lead inhaled. A store of cartridges won't be a problem
bob300w
"Now I know it looks like I have taken all precautions" Obviously not, if she is pregnant! If you are worried about it, just clean your gun outside, then bring it in. The only possibility of lead will be that in the bores before cleaning. As Chard says, there is no risk from stored cartridges. Edited April 3, 2008 by bob300w

jake_
Cheers Chaps I did get all concerned when I noticed all the **** and puffs of smoke come out of the barrels when I cleaned them which I assumed could include small particles of lead so will clean it outside from now on. Good spot on the Freudian slip I made... ??? ???
Mungler
I think the warning is probably more about discharging a shotgun around pregnant women (deaf babies and all that). If it's anything else, then do what I do - just don't bother cleaning your gun.
Mrs Sweepy
Congratulations Jake, afraid i cant help you with lead. but am sure somone on here can. try not to worry to much and enjoy the next few months ahead of you both . your life is about to change for the better i can insure you of that. and worries well thats something you can guarantee when you have a famliy they dont get any less as they get older. but then i would not have it any other way

deeksofdoom
Its only dangerous if she starts eating the cartridges , then you'll really have something to worry about!

I agree with you, the only time lead will be an issue is if your stood wrong end of the barrels when the trigger is pulled. Cheers taz.
