Russ,

from what I understand you're mentor has to have a good knowledge of the ground and must have experience with rifles etc and basically shadow you until he feels you are competent with the rifle, I was lucky in the fact that My father is ex forces and more specifically instructed the use of firearms, I also had the help and guidence of an experienced keeper for the past 12 years so my guidence has been excellent with use of everything from 30/06 / air guns / .22LR / Shotgun / and general fieldcraft.

Regards,

Garry.

A mentor just has to be with you when you shoot and advise you on safety issues etc. When he feels happy that you've learned enough to be safe on your own he will write to your FEO stating that in his opinion you don't need to be watched any more. It makes sure you've learned the rules of gun safety from someone in the know before you go out by yourself.

Any experienced FAC holder will be fine, Markbivvy would be perfect if you know him :rolleyes:
