Great pics of the deer. :good:

How close were you to get those?

SS

about 40 yards and taken from the car which they dont seem to mind

plus also on the the estate we were driving through they put food out for them

and we only saw stags no hinds

maybe someone can enlighten me why

thanks

Nice pics! :good:

Nice pics, but are the stags not supposed to have thrown off their antlers by now and be growing some new ones? In the Netherlands you see the red deer stags in velvet right now.

You're right, he should be casting those pretty soon if he hasn't already. I think the photos were taken at the end of March if I read the post correctly. ???

I guess it means he is fairly young as I think the older deer are supposed to cast first?...

Hello eagleye the stags come down in groups to young grass crops & feed from estates etc in the spring to help with growing a new set of antlers as the mature stags will be cast. Hinds normally stay in what you call a hind forest & keep out mans way & calf in peace/seclution in glens away from human interfearance. Stags can be quite tame & break in early September to look for hinds & start of the rut.

Theres a place in Galloway forest where you can stand right next to a red stag and feed them. Amazing I will try and find the name of the place for you.

located on the A712 between Newton Stewart and New Galloway.

Go on the forestry Commission's website to find out more.

Their are some hinds that have been rescued and stags from the hills usually comes down to see them, they also normally come down when people are there as well as they seem to know theirs food around.

The last time I was there, there was a big royal with nice big antlers. I got him to feed straight from my hand and its amazing.
