if i remember correctly somebody on here had a weird experiance once. Apparently he shot a rabbit ( or so he thought ) picked the rabbit up, put it in his bag and went home. some time later he began to skin the rabbit and noticed half way through skinning it that the heart was still beating...obvioulsy it stopped soon after!!! after checking the rabbit there was not a mark on it!!

i cant remember who is was at all ( sorry ! ) only thing i can think of is maybe the pellet was out of range and it knocked it out ? ? ? however stupid it sounds!!!

anyone else have anything weird happen out in the field ??

I have had what you describe happen with a 22rf, Put it in my bag, it was out cold, when I got home it ran round the kitchen, closely followed by the spaniel! I looked for any damage when I skinned it, not a scratch! Not a mark on it, ears or anywhere else.

Ive had this happen with a pheasant before and retrieved by the dog

with no signs of any shot penetration at all, shock maybe.

I blew a rabbits head clean off its shoulders at close range with my 12g and it ran off! I think the nerves can do some funny things, but I've never seen one fall over and lie still before running. You could have knocked it out, but I've never done it. I've been shooting air rifles in the field for over ten years and have had runners several times. It's the falling over as if dead that I don't get :good:

No, that's different, your pheasant was dead, and it was shock. I have seen a pheasant get up, a lad raised his gun and the pheasant dropped dead with no shot being fired. Highly stressed birds are prone to it.

What happened with the rabbit was that it was shot at, it fell over and lay unconcious, assumed dead, and came round apparently unharmed later. Not the faintest idea of where it was hit. :good:

Picked up a roadkill pheasant once (it was very fresh don't worry I'm not a tramp. Of course I couldn't have been the one that ran it over legally) it was about as dead as dead can be the car that hit it was going rather sharpish, picked it up broken neck, shoved it in the boot on top of a spare wheel I was taking to my shed, after about 5 miles I got the feeling i was being watched looked in the rear view mirror and there was mrs pheasant staring at me with head laying on one side. Quite amusing in retrospect but distinctly unnerving at the time! Pulled over and put the poor old girl out of her misery. Can't bear to see animals in pain.
