red_stag88
You can make them out of politician's spine can you? Mind you, it would be hard, as most are born with out them.

You can red but they are crooked and difficult to straighten and if you apply a little pressure they soon go bent.. FM.
Fisherman Mike
Thanks Dazza, that would be appreciated. I have a brother in NI (Omagh) who could act as postie if you do get some.. I notice from you profile a picture of Lt. Col Robert Blair Mayne... is there any significance to this or is he a hero figure. ( Mine is Robert Falconer Scott ) As you know Blair Mayne was the most decorated solidier of the Second war and his exploits and life history make excellent reading. He was an astonishing man. My late uncle fought beside him in Scicily I think, I will have to check with my Dad, But Blair Mayne was a name which often came up in his recollection of the war. Do you come from Newtownards.?? Why the Guy was never Knighted is beyond me they give them out like confetti these days.
dazza
Ive always admired Blair Mayne, Did you know he was a founder member of the SAS? If you read any of the books written about him some of the stories will amaze you! I live near Newtownards and theirs recently been a bronze statue of Blair Mayne erected in memory of him in the town Square Theirs an online petition on Blair Maynes website to try and get him awarded a VC

Fisherman Mike
Barrie, Cherry would be a good one it has a nice grain and colour. If you get any with any burrs on the trunk or features let me know. About 4 to 6 ins across would be ideal. Cheers mate.
dodeer
Go to your local hunt kennels and ask for horn, bone etc, if they haven't got any there they will soon have (i always did). barrie0
Mike Would you be interested in a trunk of walnut approx 18 inches wide by 2- 3ft long . It is rock hard stuff as it s$£%^ed out a chainsaw blade in about a minute and by the time we cut it in half it had burnt out the clutch . Very , very heavy as well as I watched the other two lads hump it onto the back of the van whilst I did something else Anyway let us know ,as I can see it going walkies in the yard , can take a picture if you like . May be able to get some smaller pieces also .
Fisherman Mike
Thanks Barry I dont wish to sound ungrateful but it would not be suitable for my purposes unless it was burred. Thanks anyway. FM.
Teal
barrie, walnut wood is very pricey, it might be worth trying to sell it. Measurement is not a great skill of mine, but it might be possible to make a gunstock (or two) out of it?
barrie0
No probs Mike , I will take some photos anyway as there may be some smaller pieces that might interest you . If not I may ponder on Teals reply and have a ring about .

In first class post today, maybe you can tell me what they are from, whatever it was it tasted very nice cooked in a red wine and garlic sauce. I can't understand why so few people eat road kill, if it's still steaming when you find it it's fresh enough for me

Realise they are a bit small but quite nicely formed so might make something.
