most of all, im dying to get my first woodie, prepare him and have him for tea !!! never ate it before and really keen to try it... its the whole reason i got involved (as opposed to shooting clays) but im yet to get off the starting blocks....havent managed to get any permission anywhere yet and everytime i go out the door all i see is pigeons flying everywhere i look !!

im in runcorn, but will travel withing cheshire/merseyside....

just got back in now from spending all afternoon driving round checking out feilds/farms etc and talking with a few farmers i managed to pass by.... i didnt like to approach them whilst they were at work or go wandering around the farm yard looking for them for that matter.... i really dont know what approach to take here???

the three farmers i managed to talk with had different opinions.... one said he was not the land owner, he rented the feilds....... one said he already had a regular pigeon shooter and a guy with a hawk....(cant be doing a very good job cos there was hundreds of them everywhere i looked.......) and the other just didnt want to know.....:P

i followed all the rules mention here, smartly dressed, very polite, got to the point rather than faffing.....

ill try again another day next week.....

does anyone think phoneing first would be an acceptable approach, as most of the farms are listed on yell.com :good:

When he said he rented the field I presume you asked "who from....where does he live..."? (I bet you the owner is lord something and owns half the county)

When he said he has a regular pigeon shooter did you ask "how often, let me talk to him and we can arrange weekly cover"?

When he didn't want to know did you say "here's my number, call me when you change your mind"?

Not being negative mate, I have always found a no can be turned into a yes and some permissions can take months or years.

Get more irons in the fire and don't give up!!

Elmer.

i was out yesterday knocking but still no joy.....

would still appreciate a day out if anyone local can offer one...and thanks to those who have offered from further a field... i may well have to travel up to you guys before long.... its just seems rediculas when im surrounded by countryside where i am !!!!!!!!!!

i was told that cheshire farmers were notoriously hard to crack.... boy was that an understatement........

here you go. just changed some of the bits, but left the main stuff in.

Dear Sir / Madam

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter, I would like to firstly introduce myself to you. I am a 31yr old responsible professional.

I live in Hull and as I stated above work in Lincolnshire, I am a keen air gunner and along with my son, shoot on privately owned land by day and night over a weekend at some of the suppliers who grow for the business I work for, living in Hull I am looking to seek written permission from farmers, golf clubs and water sport clubs such as yourself to allow me to continue enjoying my hobby and sport more locally, again mainly on a weekend and sometimes by night, week end night time for golf clubs and water sport clubs (when no one else is there, for the obvious reasons)

I am a member of the British Air Gunners Association and have their liability insurance, as I stated earlier I am responsible and will respect your land, greens, property and your wishes.

I would like to shoot only vermin and will remove any dead quarry from your land. Whilst on your property I would be glad to let you know if I notice anything unusual or untoward.

I enclose a stamped addressed envelope and a pre-prepared shooting permission form for you to complete and kindly return to me.

The form details your permission and the type of quarry you consent to me shooting on your land, with a section detailing your preferred contact number.

Again I ask you consider my request that allows me to enjoy my hobby and at the same time help you in your control of vermin.

I hope you do consider giving me permission but if you find yourself unable to, would you also consider returning the form to me with "NO" written across it, I will know then not to approach you again.

If you do kindly decide to grant me permission to shoot your land and you have any drawings or details of your boundaries these would be very useful.

Thank you for your time and I possibly look forward to meeting you some time in the future.

rang a few farms this afternoon after seeing literally hundreds of pigeons all over evryfield i drove passed... i asked could i leave my number in case they needed any help and one took it down !!! after all this, one farm has got my number.....thats as far as i ve got.....

i reckon the problem is, is those local to me who have land, probably have rights to most of it..... its tight knit with no real way in....

ill keep trying whilst my shiny lanber gathers dust.....

onwards and upwards as they say...., still my chin is dragging and im beggining to get a bit sulky over it all......as there must be 20 woodies sat on the roofs of houses in my street as were right near the feilds.... they flying over my garden constantly....god help any of them if they land, ill be out with the air rifle quicker than you can say pigeon pie !!!

any offers still welcome, i aint been out yet !!!
