Right I need a big favour.

You can tell me to P**s off and I won’t be offended, well not much <_< .

So hear goes with the sob story first to soften you up :good: .

You might remember me talking about a young lad who is the son

of a friend of my wife’s. Well he needs a distraction in life because

he will end up a bad un if he continues as he is.

I took him shooting a month or so ago and he loved it, he responds

well to me. I want to take him shooting again all done properly at

registered sites, but my gun is far too powerful for him.

I want him to have a go with a 410.

So here is my problem, money is tight and I can’t justify buying one

for him to use at the moment. If it worked out I would but not just yet.

I do not know anyone who owns a 410.

So here is the favour.

Would anybody be prepared to lend me a 410 for a week or two?

if possible just so I can take this lad shooting again. All above board

and shown on the Shotgun certificate.

I would not be able to pay you but I would be able to help you any

way you want. I am a fully qualified engineer and electrician so

if there was a days work you want doing I would be prepared to do it

I’ll even just be a labourer and help you out if you want.

Like I said if I’m out of order tell me to buggar off and I will but

if you have a 410 you won’t miss for a week or two, then I would

be very grateful if you would consider the loan.

I am near Doncaster so anywhere within a 100 mile radius I would be

prepared to travel to meet you.

Cheers taz

That's not a big ask, Taz, and I would be more than willing to help you out if you weren't 300+ miles away. I'm sure there'll be somebody who can loan you a .410, it being for a worthy cause an all. If you only have the .410 on loan for less than 72 hours, you need not notify the Police.

Hi guys.

I've been back a few days and it looks like there is no one

nearby who is prepared to help out.

So I'll try another tack.

I'll post on the wanted section but has anyone got a 410 for sale.

Condition not too important, just safe.

I can get a new Baikal for £100 so I don't want to spend

too much money.

Cheers taz.

Hi Taz,

I can't help you out with a .410 I'm afraid, but before you go down that route have you considered getting him a 12 or 20 bore that fits him? The reason I ask is that I know several people who have bought their kids a .410 only to find they 'outgrow' it almost immediately. Often they try them first with a 12 that doesn't fit, the gun is too long so their arms are outstretched, this causes them to have to lean backwards to balance it, leaving them open to be knocked back by the recoil. They then assume that they won't be able to handle a 12.

One of the beaters on our shoot bought his 12 year old a very light, very short side by side with a shortened stock in 12 gauge. We were all rather sceptical about this because the gun, being so light, would recoil quite heavily but surprisingly the lad got used to it very quickly and was able to handle the recoil (with light loads initially) because the gun fits him.

I think .410's have a place as a training gun for very small children, but you will be surprised how well the kids will handle a 12 or 20 from the age of 11 onwards so long as the gun fits them well and the loads aren't too pokey. It is then a smooth and continuous progression without having to make the change from .410 to a large calibre later on.

Just a thought!

p.s. I think it's great what you are doing for him, too bad more kids don't have someone as good as you to mentor them!

^^ thats not a bad idea.

i understand youdont want to spend loads but what about trying the 12 with some light loads in it?

Cheers guys

I have thought about it but he is so small that I do not

think he can take it yet. He is nearly13 but he can't weigh

5 stone wet through. He has used my plastic (so light) semi

with 21g carts in and it hurt him. It was a bad fit I admit

but in the long run If he stays out of trouble that is, I would

consider it. Short term I think it will be the cheapest option

to start with.

Its one of those "what to do for the best things"?

I sat down with him today and told him I would be prepared to

do it for him if he stayed out of trouble for the next 4 weeks.

4 WEEKS!! 4 WEEKS is no time to wait you may shout but to this

lad waiting till tommorow for somthing will kill him. With me he

is a polite, quiet, sensative lad.

The police have a motorcross site nearby and it is open to

the public but it is for scroats like him. It keeps them off the street

and gives them responsibility. If the responsibilit of shooting will

give him somthing to focus on other than the next laugh then it might

be worth it.

I have always thought that a good clip round the ear was the best way to go (the old fashioned way),never done me harm was taught to respect elders and so on.

Now here is the new outake, find something they enjoy doing a lot and it has a massive affect and input into there lives, cause the minute the start to crack, you threaten to take away there enjoyment, which is shooting in this case and they will give up and do anything for what they believe in.

Good on you Taz and sorry dont have 410 mate cause we could of met up but the best of luck.

ps think we need to remember it would be you borrowing the gun and not the young lad, hope this helps .

Cheers guys.

I am old fashioned as well I spose. I have never hit him but he knows when he

is in trouble with me. The truth is he has very few boundries and it is his

mother to blame. I can say that because she is a friend and I have known this lad

since he was born. She is a single mum living is a rough area and can't say

no to him. If she punishes him by grounding him or removing his playstation

it only lasts a few hours then she gives in because she feels guilty.

She knows where she stands with my wife and I and we class ourselves as

friends but we don't condone how she treats him and she knows this, but

friendship does not mean we judge her, she has her own problems.

But the lad responds to me, when I say yes he knows it means yes, when

I say no he knows it means no and he respects that. In truth, and I hate

to say this I don't think there is any hope. Will a few hours a week with me

make a difference? I don't know but one thing is for sure if if has nothing

to look forward to he has nothing to lose. At least this way he has somthing

to focus on.

Cheers Guys taz.

I have an old Baikal 12 bore you can have if it's any good for him . It's light and does pack quite a bang . Might not be your thing , but worth a go for nowt .

all the best yis yp :D

Thankyou YP.

I was trying to avoid a 12g but I think I could give it a try.

Maybe I am underestimating his strength but my semi is

just to much for him.

A 12g with 21gramme loads and a good butt pad might do

the trick.

I will PM you and we can talk if that is ok.

Cheers taz.
