Anyone shooting the British Open?

Recommended Posts

I'm travelling down Thursday night and staying in a local B&B ready for my 10:40 Sportrap slot, and then the sporting at 1pm Friday.

I'm trying/hoping for an 80+ result in both disciplines.

I've even treated myself to some posh bullets to use. Hull Sovereign Extreme Range FITASC 7s. I usually use the cheapest Eley First 7.5s. I used two at the Mays shoot and found absolutley no difference at all, but at least they'll look good in the bins.

Anyone else taking part?

Don't expect too much from this ground, it's not a particularly good ground for Sporting, that probably accounts for the very low entry take up this year.

D'oh. I was rather hoping for South Down type targets.

I hear that there will be a few super high towers there, which will be a new experience for me at least.

I'm shooting at 1pm on Saturday also :) Looking forward to it greatly

Will there be the opportunity to enter the sportrap on the day Cat?

You could risk it on the day, there may well be places, however I would suggest you walk the Sporting course first to study each stand carefully, I always think it's time well spent, you can suss out what each target is doing and then plan a strategy for each stand before you get there.

I shall be arriving at the ground bright and early in order to have a good walk around and chill out before shooting. Thought about maybe shooting the sportrap on Friday, but thinking about it may just give it a miss and use the money saved to get some decent practice in this weekend. As usual however, there is a distinct lack of sporting oop north. :thanks:

Is it going to be expected that one chucks ones empties in the bins as we're shooting? My hand/eye co-ordination usually means that they end up on the floor anyway, plus my gun still being on the tight side needing a bit more effort to get the ejectors ejecting.

So, is it an unwritten rule to bin, or can we eject them over our shoulders?

The weather forecast is now pretty dire for the whole 3 days, if there's one ground in the country you do not want to be at when the weather is bad, it's Southern Counties, as it's perched right on top of a hill and is frequently "fogged out" by low cloud when all of the low lying surrounding areas are cloud free.

Apologies if I'm sounding like a page out of MC's book of excuses for poor performance, but do take a stout brolly and waterproofs, and quite how you shoot the tower birds in the pouring rain with glasses on is beyond even my understanding.

I hear that the ground is a quagmire, they are using some meadows across the road from the main ground, and surprise surprise, it's a tad wet underfoot now. :good:

Wellies are definitely the order of the day. :good:

My mate is leading the Sportrap with a 92, Diggy is leading the Sporting with a 90, Faulds had done an 88.

Let's hope the rain eases off a bit for tommorow at about 12.55. :stupid:

I wonder how PDLM got on, he will have done very well if he made his target of 80..??

What a disaster.

I seriously wish I hadn't gone.

It was monsoon conditions. I have mud up to my knees. The 100 Sporting took my squad nearly 5 hours to shoot, and having missed lunch and was constantly drowned before and after the shoot... I wasn't in the best of minds.

It was good for the first 60 where I'd only dropped 11 birds. Then we had a 1 hour wait for a stand. We argued the toss and skipped a couple of stands to the empty ones and by then I was cold and angry. Started shooting really badly and then as I walked out the stand, which was on a slope, I slipped and because I grabbed the cage with my hand managed to pull my lat. So now I'm cold, tired and hurt... and beging told to wait again for a stand as we were out of sequence almost saw me going home, last couple of stands I barely hit anything.

So, 61/100. ****.

Digweed on 90, a few in the 80s but most in the 70s and 60s. Ben Hustwaite gave up after dropping 8 in the first 24.

Never going again.

Ya, I hope so. The conditions were quite unbelievable. Imagine standing on top of the highest hill in the area, in the middle of a gale force 9 (nearly) facing heavy rain coming in at a 15 degree angle and having to shot some distance targets. I took some photos on my phone, I'll see if I can get them off and online.

Quite a few guns called it a day, the score board at the end of the day had a whole page of partitial scores, some only shooting two or three stands.

Sounds like you did well to stick it out Peter and in those conditions your score seems pretty good all considered.

Never mind, weather was **** at the Wharf as well. I wondered how the shooting was going as peered out into the rain, then thought sod 'em and put the kettle on :stupid:

Let's hope Cat has better luck, not too bad here at the moment.
