.17 HMR bore cleaning

I have a cz varmint .17 hmr and find it needs cleaning after all outings even if I've only put through five or six rounds.

.17's leave a lot more **** in your barrel compared to say a .22 this is because .22 rounds pretty much clean the barrel every time thy are fired.

A tip for cleaning your .17 is to invest in a good cleaning rod and push through a couple of earbuds that have been cut in half. You can push one or two through with bore cleaner on them and then finish it off with a couple of dry ones. It works for me.

My Quad HMR barrel don't seem to like boresnakes. My grouping became very erratic after using my brothers snake whilst on a shooting break in Cornwall. Some 600 bullets were used in less than a week when we got a new permission of broccoli "stubble" that had never been shot. It was literally on our doorstep too

So I felt I ought to give it a clean. Never got it right again till after I got back home and used my jags on a push through with copper solvent followed by more cotton jags till they came out clean.

I generally clean every time I start a new 500 brick of bullets.

My CZ HMR plays silly ******* if I rod the barrel out: it takes circa 30 shots to get the POI to return to normal. Even boresnaking it seems to throw things off slightly. Therefore I only boresnake the barrel when accuracy begins to tail off.

I wouldn't go pushing cotton buds through any barrel, even a CZ rimfire barrel. It'll prevent the rod running parallel to the bore, the socket at the tip of the cleaning rod coming into contact with the lands. If you must rod it out, use a jag and a patch to prevent any damage.

Out of curiosity though, has anybody found a way of spraying Forrest Bore Foam into a .17 HMR barrel, without spraying the stuff everywhere but the bore?

On my Quad I find that if you push the end of the tube firmly and flat flush around the breech the foam goes in ok so long as you don't squirt at full power! It's also a good idea to pad the magazine hole with some kitchen roll to catch any overspill. It does still tend to jet out the muzzle end though! :good:
