Tony9r
Well, I finally plucked up the courage to do it... Head shot a decent size rabbit on Tuesday, gutted it on site and took it home where I skinned it and Mrs9r put it into a bowl of salted water and left overnight. Next day we rinsed, then put the rabbit in the freezer. Last night Mrs9r removed it from the freezer to defrost ready for today. Said rabbit was placed into a large pan of water, and boiled for apprximatly 2.5 hours... end result, the meat just fell off the bones Time for a taste... "that's not rabbit - IT'S CHICKEN?!?!?!" Can't believe how nice it tastes, the kids even want it in their sandwiches for school tomorrow Looks like I'm dragging the old chest freezer out of the garage ready for a bumper supply of rabbit! , wish I'd have tried it a long time ago

Wookie
Rabbit is ace. you will not get fresher or more tasty meat anywhere and it is all the better for being just about free (assuming you only take one shot!). It's also really versatile. take a look at the recipes section for just some of the ideas! I like mine slow cooked in a cassorole with pulses and beans. Harnser
In my humble opinion the cooney is the best taste of them all . Delicious in a spagetti sauce . Harnser .
Bleeh
It's strange really. I've always thought that rabbit tastes of ****** all. It's like chicken, you've really got to have it with a nice glaze or sauce to make it come out. Now, go shoot a muntjac, if you think rabbit tastes good - you're head might explode. Failing that, squirrel, they also taste rather nice, be it a tad on the small side. (furthermore, I'd like to ask, have you honestly been shooting rabbits, but intill now you have not been willing to eat them? I know your making up for your sins, but that sort of behavior really does pander to the anti's) Edited October 5, 2008 by Bleeh

Wookie
Heh... Got a lovely rabbit curry tonight. Can't wait! If I'm lucky, I'll be able to go out before it's ready to re-stock the freezer.

Tony9r
Now, go shoot a muntjac, if you think rabbit tastes good - you're head might explode. (furthermore, I'd like to ask, have you honestly been shooting rabbits, but intill now you have not been willing to eat them? I know your making up for your sins, but that sort of behavior really does pander to the anti's) Would like to try, but don't have deer rifle/ticket In the last couple of years shooting, I believe that I have done a good service to my farmer and golf course manager in the unpaid control of vermin on their land, and of course I thoroughly enjoy shooting... within this time I have taken great pleasure in giving rabbit's that I have shot completely FOC to friend’s and neighbour's or anybody else that want's them. I'm sure that there are many shooter's out there that don't/won't eat what they have shot In that respect "that sort of behaviour" is pretty irrelevant don't you think? Now, I understand where your coming from, but you've got to understand that the most part of the country does not shoot, but ironically enough hold more control on our freedoms to shoot or not, than the shooting community does. That's how it works; it's a democracy after all. Now, some people find the idea of killing for fun very distressing, and to the most part wrong and sick, so the main argument against this is simply your food has to come from somewhere, if you've ever eaten meat, someone has had to kill it, but we've all got to eat, it's the necessary evil. I just find the idea that you’re more than happy to kill it, but you wouldn't want to eat it a bit shallow. (other than shooting rats because of lepto, or magpies because of songbirds and so on) The shooting ideal we want to give to the public is ''I enjoy shooting, and preparing my own dinner'' Rather than ''It's fun to shoot stuff''. It's all about respect for the wildlife around, and if you have to kill something, you try not to waste it, something I was brought up with and believe in more so than most people. It's all about public image. It's something that not enough people take into serious consideration, look at fox-hunting for example. At which point did I say I "kill for fun" Like I said, I go out shooting be it pigeon or rabbit etc as a service to two people who were kind enough to allow me onto their land to control these pests... yes, pests... not to go out hunting to feed my family - you could say the eating part is a perk of the job! At no stage did my FLO tell me during the application of my shotgun and firearms that I have to eat what I shoot  , we're not all like HFW! southernlad
Clearly none of the fox shooters have looked at this thread yet then... don't know many who eat them. Personally I like to only shoot what can be eaten, by me or by someone else, but that's just me. I find it more justifiable in my own mind to take the life of an animal if it's for food. The more wild food i eat, the better and I'd much rather shoot a rabbit, kill it cleanly and eat it knowing it's lived the way it's supposed to and not been kept in a tiny cage to get fat and unhealthy. And anyone who shoots and says they don't do it for fun is lying. My two penneth. cheers SL
MM
hey, i love the joy of shooting. i couldnt do it just for the pest control. antis this, antis that... blah blah... if i didnt enjoy what i was doing, i wouldnt do it.
Tony9r
Maybe I came across wrong... I really enjoy, no - LOVE shooting so no, I don't do it just for the need of pest control. All I was getting at is that I didn't say it was "fun to kill" in any of my posts in this thread As Martin say's Anti's - blah, blah they can hug as many tree's as they like as long as they stay out of my life Just to add, I have every respect for wildlife - anything from mice to elephants
