I'm off beating this weekend...........

Recommended Posts

As a general guide

You will be pushing through bushes and brambles, so tough trousers are essential. Many favour waxed leggings if it's wet. Likewise, a jacket that doesn't snag or tear easily is an advantage, bear in mind that even if it isn't raining, walking through game crops, woods etc can get you very wet very quickly. A good hat, and boots if your choice. Take a stick, and a hip flask full of 2 year old sloe gin (essential to stay on the right side of the keeper!)

Put a Mars bar in your pocket, in case a dog eats your butties. Do what the keeper says. But most of all, enjoy!

Bring waterproof trousers, and good strong boots.

No if's, not buts. Bring them, if you don't, you WILL regret it.

And yes, I always bring some mints or something of the like, to keep yourself entertained while marching through heavy plow in the rain..

You might be out in the open, you may be bashing through cover, you may be in brambles so take stuff to cover the worst and then ask about when you get there.

Do what you are told, if in doubt just ask, don't pretend to know what you are doing if you don't.

Ask if you 'shooting through' or stopping for lunch, depends on the setup but where we beat if you shoot through lunch goes on the beaters wagon, if not it stays in the hut.

Try and hook up with someone who looks like they are, or is experienced, and learn from them.

Take a packet of Chocholate Eclars, don't ask me why, but they seem to be the sweet of choice on the beaters wagon

Enjoy yourself!

Worst mistake i ever made was having a cr#p pair of boots. By the time we had walked the first field of beet i was about 8" taller through the mud on me boots. They weighed a ton and were bloody uncomfortable.

Like the chaps have said keep dry and warm. Pay attention to whats going on around you. Most importantly ENJOY.

I heard putting stockings on over your boots stops the mud / heavy clay sticking.

I will leave that hanging......

Yeah, I forgot to mention. You must wear red ''camo'' around your lips (lipstick works) so you can be spotted.

Futhermor, always call the gamekeeper ''Darling'', it's part of there herritage and they will be offended if you don't.
