game_boy
Well following on from my post last night on Other Types of Shooting I ventured out to my goose shootig field this morning, although I was running late. As I was away from home last night I had to reture to get my new decoys for this morning, I planned to be at the field for 7 but didnt make it up there till half passed and by that time they had lifted off the water. Got up to the famr raced up the track to the field and hastily put out the decoys hearing all the time the geese down below on the stubble fields. Hopefully a skein would come my way. Got into position and started calling, looked behind and bang on they were coming towards me, in particular this field is a honey pot for these geese in the morning, they go mad for it every year as its a field that floods alot and so has alot of new grass on it. If your there early enough no decoys are needed, but good to have them all the same. I know from past years that they fly over head, turn and then land in the field. From the gorse bush I was hiding in I started blowing the feeding call as they came nearer, turned round for a peak and they were coming back over me, probably about 50 to 100 possibly more. These were lower than usual and I think my decoys had given them some confidence to land as i've been here in previous years I've been in the same position and they have been out of range. But I wasnt in early enough to see if they would land in my feild. Anyways waited for a good position and sprung up to find birds flaring all over the shop and manged 2 birds for three shots, both of which fell to ground with 50g magnums no bother. So bingo, first ones of the season!

game_boy
Cheers chaps, was well chuffed. I've had to casserole one of them as the magnums connected very well with it. HD- I've only noticed them since about 2 weeks ago steadily building up, was speaking to the chap in Bushwear and he said there were alot in Blackford also. I'll see what I can do Jake, dependant on landowner etc.. Give me a PM when your around.

Cosd
Nice shooting game-boy Sorry to ask a silly question but when you say "you sprung up" where you in a normal hide? Also, can you get a heavy enough load in a 2 3/4" shell if your gun won't take a magnum load? I guess you need 50g loads for these birds.... No probs, I was kind of in between 2 gorse bushes kneeling down, keeping my white face out of view. as I didnt have time to get my camo net, but its pretty perfect as its right under where they come in. This works pretty well, enough for a couple of people. They dont need 50g, 42g or 36g of 3's will do out of a 2 3/4 inch tube, but I wanted magnums as they have been high before and plus I have new gun with 3inch chamber. Cosd
OK, one more stupid question, what's a "gorse bush" Thanks mate
game_boy
You must have gorse in Essex? Its a prickly bush with a yellow flower.
