farmboy
Hi, I'm just starting the process of making my FAC/SGC applications. With regards to referees, do any of you know if a great Uncle would be considered as suitable. The great uncle in question is well aware of my shooting activities as I've helped keep his rabbit numbers in check. He also has a CBE and I'd assume that may count towards something? I've looked at various guidance documents to both applicants and police but I've seen nothing mentioned with regard to this. I'm also considering asking either my boss or a retired JP who has known me all my life. Neither are particularly aware of my attitude towards firearms/shooting though. Would that be a problem? markbivvy
no family members, your boss and jp are OK.unless they have some previous.
steve_b_wales
As above. No family member at all. A GP, or even someone who owns their onw business ( for some time) should suffice. My local Vicar signed mine years ago and repeats it when my renewal comes up. farmboy
Ok, thanks lads. I thought that may be the case. Just wasn't 100% Ought to be ok with the boss. He owns the company and employs 20 odd people. I've been there for 4 years. I'm in his good books at the moment as I'm needing a knee op soon and offered to postpone it if I get called in over the Christmas period. Bleeh
The Rule of thumb, is anyone who has a job that's a Profession, and isn't worth loosing. So, a teacher, GP, Civil servant, that sort of thing. (anyone you'd put Esq. to on a letter) Not Spotty fred, who work's down your local greesy spoon, and people who are self-employed can be a risky area too. farmboy
for doing that you should ask him to pay for it aswell Seemed like the right thing to do. After all, I did take all of last december off for a knee op at very short notice. Feels unfair on my colleagues more than anything.

Cushat
SGC & FAC referees are different. SGC - someone of standing i.e. professional person as stated above (teacher, engineer etc) FAC - referee can be anyone (who isn't related) who is vouching for your competence, experience and safety with firearms Of course the problem comes with coterminous applications where your FAC referees aren't deemed to be of "suitable standing" and your SGC referee has no knowledge of your shooting!! MC
For my SGC the landlord at my local signed mine, and for my FAC my mates Dad who I shoot with was one and he is a digger driver. Proffesional only means you get paid to do a job
