best calibre for deer .308 or .30-06

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

decided to buy another rifle for deer ;) ,what I am going to get will be a fairly light gun, low mag scope, no moderator. :) but cant make up my mind about calibre :yp: been looking at .308 or .30-06 studying the balistic data and to be honest though there are slight differences, I cant see any significant difference, does anyone have experience of theses two calibres, if so what are the pros and cons of them,

thanks in advance for your advice.

Tim

My personal favourite is a .243 80/100 gm bullets that's legal for all UK deer species. Very low recoil, you can watch the bullet strike through the scope, very little carcase damage and a very accurate rifle for all your stalking needs. Fitted with a Mod (essential IMO) it sits still on any length of sticks.

I like .270 , I know some people dont , I have a Parker Hale Safari with a T8 mod which is nice and light , I am sure you can find lighter gun T3 or similar.

Ammo is reasonable I like 150g plenty of punch , Privi 150g soft point @ £40 per 100 no point reloading .

Accurate out to 300yds but I never take a Deer at more than 225/250 yds

Happy Hunting

Basically its like this.......the 30-06 is everything the 308 is + 100FPS :yp:

If you want to shoot 180's, buy the 30-06

If you want to shoot 150's the 308 is plenty for UK species.

NOW, if you think you might venture further afield, well who knows.

308 ammo is like buying bread and butter, 30-06 isnt exactly rare either.

308's are very common (good or bad, you decide...I have one) and maybe the 30-06 is something a little bit different WITHOUT being pointless or obscure.

The difference in ammo cost is negligable, even more so if you handload, a few pence a shot at most.

Both will give you good barrel life.

BOTH ARE, UNFORTUNATELY FOR YOU, JUST GOOD CARTRIDGES with no real faults or drawbacks.

Hard Choice. If you really cant decide, buy a 6.5x55.

What he said, with only one minor caveat. For bullets under 165, you'll get the same speed out of a 308 and a 30-06. For bullets over 165 the -06 wins. For a 165 you're right on the border.

Pick the 308 if you're going to stick to lighter bullets (or heavier bullets at slightly shorter ranges) because you'll save 10 gr of powder per round. If you think you'll go to heavier bullets at some point, then pick the -06.

If you don't reload, I'd pick the 308 just because of the amount and varienty of quality ammo available.

thanks,

rick

Just on a point of interesting pedantry, 'Ammo & Ballistics 3' by Bob Forker lists 115 factory loads for the .308, and 128 for the .30-06. Not at all what I would have expected. However I've yet to come across Black Hills, Hirtenberger and A-Square ammunition in the UK.

I have both and shoot the 308 much much more than the 30.06.................the ballsistics with factory loads are minimal over hunting ranges and the kick is the same as far as I can see, however the price of ammo for the one and other is conciderable , go for the 308 its cheaper with ammo.
