Cranfield
I had a walk/drive round some of my permissions this afternoon and every pigeon I saw feeding was on a hawthorn bush. Some of the bushes were smothered in birds. I shot three that came out of the woods and they all had red berries in their crops and one had some old wheat grain. Harnser
I think that we seam to forget the foragaging capabilitys of the wood pigeon .I to have seen them on hawthorn berrys ,chestnuts ,beech nuts ,elderberry ,pine cones .This is how they used to make their living years ago before man made it easier for them with the modern farming methods . Whitebridges
Interesting, I shot a few today that had a berry mix in them. Definately haws, old blacks, early ivy, etc. Also a few acorns to grind up the mix. We had a nip of cold air and a few hore frosts this way this week. A old sage I know said it will be a hard winter. If he knows it I suspect the pigeon have twigged it and are "stocking up" on fruit. Edited November 2, 2008 by Whitebridges
James Dixey
Sitty tree is for the pigeons to sit in and debate the world economic crisis Lofting pole is for you to put decoys onto branches and the last 2 actually on the pole to draw other pigeons in for a general chat as per above You will get more answers but here is one for starters.... you may have seen their favourite places to mooch during the day often digesting food etc.
nhamm2
I also bagged a bird yesterday which had a mixture of wheat and bright red berries which I reckon were hawthorn. Where they are still finding the wheat is beyond me, but there was an awful lot in this birds' crop. Farmer would have a fit. Is it me or have the birds flocked up early this year? JonnyR
The wife was out on Friday on our little syndicate and it was full of Pigeon. They shot 7 on the last drive, virtually all rammed and I mean rammed with Hawthorn berries. Several of them, their crops burst open as they hit the deck. I have never seen crops so full. Definately flocked up in large numbers already. Jon.
