lewis
I Was wondering where the woodcocks pin feather is located? Is it in the inside or outside of the wing? I know it is in the first joint of the wing, But after looking for it for the past ten minuites i gave up Has anyone got any pictures where exactly it is on the bird? Thanks
scolopax
They are on the very outside of the wing, just past the wrist joint and at the base of the leading primary. I had a fair collection stuck in the band of an old wax cotton bush hat, over twenty years worth, but somehow managed to lose the hat at the start of this years wildfowling season, guess I left it on the roof of the car then drove off, thats how I lose most things. Taff Mason
they are just very small fine feathers. but what do they get used for? am i right in thinking they are used for very intricate paintings and things?
Ballymac
If you find them there is a way of mounting them using the birds' beak. Apparently when the beak is cut there are two holes in it so you can put the left and right pin feathers in and then put this on your hat. Suffolk shooter
To aid in removal, pullout the primary feather first on each wing. The pin feather will be the small slim feather no more than an inch long and approx 5mm across. SS

henry d
Primary = First The primaries are the big ones that provide lift, the pin is on the leading edge.
casts_by_fly
ah, it is the feathers on the leading edge of the primary flight feathers. In fly tying they are called biots. You use them as tails, legs, bodies, and wing casings of various patterns. You'll find them on the leading edge of all of the primary flight feathers, not just the first one.
