Catamong
I invited Harfordwmj to share the hide yesterday, as I had been watching a rape field for a couple of days and there were plenty of birds flighting in to it. We arrived at the field at 7.30am, having placed a banger rope and scarecrow on a nearby field to deter the birds from settling there. The dawn flight was truly amazing, some vast flocks of birds flew over, (many never came back unfortunately). We got set up with a rotary, flapper, bobber and 20 full bodied deeks and despite the low sun being right in our eyes, the odd bird started to come in, and we had 10 on the clicker by 9.00am. Will was shooting very steady, he was a bit eager to take the birds too far out to start with, but soon got the hang of letting them come right in behind the rotary to about 25 - 30 yards to ensure a clean kill every time. The birds came in pretty steady right up till about midday, when it just fizzled out, they'd clearly found another "safe haven" to feed unmolested. We picked up 43 woodies, not a bad bag for early season rape. Will shot very well, and pulled off some real corkers on birds as they flared away from the deeks, well done that man. Here's a pic of the bag: All in all, a great days sport, and also good to see so many Red kites and Buzzards about. Cat.
proTOM1
Sounds like you had a good day mate well done !
Billy.
All credit to Catamong for his really good advice (and the majority of the bag!). I really learnt a lot yesterday and will certainly be putting that back into practice. As he said, I was a bit eager to shoot them further out, which may explain my recent struggles to get a big bag of birds. (My misbehaving Semi Auto didn't help the situation though!) Thank you Catamong, I will look forward to next time. Will

Catamong
Catmong, I hope you cleaned your shottie afterwards lol No way ........I'm using it again tomorrow and then again on Sunday, so what's the point..?? It's only a shotgun with no dirt sensitive moving parts, I can assure you if it was an SA80 and there was any likelyhood of me having to face the taliban coming in hordes over the hill towards me, rest assured you'd be happy to eat your breakfast off it. Catamong
Great shooting and a good write up Cat, are the woodies in the freezer now mate? ATB Nick No, I always sell them fresh to local Game Dealers, they're actually pleased to take 'em at the moment. I'm organising a day for a friend tomorrow and he could be in for a good bag 'cos I'm going round the local area keeping 'em off the other rape fields..!! Cat. Harnser
Well done Cat , I to was out on the rape today and struggled to shoot 21 . It was very hard work what with the birds not wanting to decoy .Had to settle for mainly crossing birds that came for a look and then jinked off . Testing shooting ,but none the less rewarding . Early season rape shooting really is hit or miss excuse the pun . Harnser .
