Matt Gould
Ive just applyed for a .17hmr for rabbits. Many Thanks Matt B)
Baldrick
17gr ballistic tips (V-Shok is Federal's brand name) are probably used for 90% of shots through an HMR. They offer a very flat trajectory, and rapid expansion on small quarry. It's a simple copper-jacketed round with a conical plastic tip, to aid expansion and aerodynamics. I find the 20gr hollow-points equally accurate, but the heads often fail to break up in small quarry. The hollow point itself is tiny, and in my opinion, insufficient. I would stick with 17gr ballistic tips, personally, as that gives you all the calibre's advantages. And buy a CZ 452.
Matt Gould
I was going to buy my Grandads 452 american heavy barrel and put a trigger kit on it.

On the other hand the Vmax expands very well and causes a lot of damage which equates to far better stopping power
realtreedave
i would stick to 17 grain balistic tips.the hollow points have a greater ability for riccochets.there just isnt any advantage if you headshoot rabbits
Matt Gould
what the most accurate v-shok bullet for a cz452 american ? hornady,Remington..............?
Baldrick
Matt, I believe that all HMR ammunition is made by CCI, irrespective of the label. Whether there's any truth in that, I don't know. I use Federal V-Shok and Remington 17gr Accutip in my CZ.

I think its down to when the manufacturing lines are re -calibrated that shows the difference in performance amongst the brands Hornady were great in my CZ then a new batch I tried were awful and as a result I swapped to Remmington with no issues so far. PS Don't forget Sellier and bellot made in the CZ republic .
Baldrick
I've had similar inconsistencies between brands, Deadeye. I just buy from the same batch until that runs out.
Evil Elvis
seconded stick to the Vmax, the hollow points penetrate very well a bit too well as they just make a tiny hole and go straight through which means you will get runners unless they are head shots Ive had a few with the 17gr too, as someone said...has to be a head shot!!! On the other extreme, Ive body shot a few and blown out the guts, It depends largley on wether the tip shatters or not on impact.Ive found they expand better on longer range targets, most of my "runners" have been close range shots and you SEE the round hit the ground behind the rabbit!! Axe
Best results i've had are with Federals, though on price I have been buying Remmington which also work well. But the last block of 500 I had of Remmington are not as predictable. I don't know about CCI making them all but I would imagine each brand uses a different combination for the round. I've certainly had differing results between the 3 that I have tried, Federal, Hornady and Remmington.
