EAR DEFENDERS

If you have Sonic's and find them a bit hard, you can take the valve bit out and chuck the rubber part in boiling water briefly, it will soften them, but seems to work better on the old ones than the new ones - I have both.

For rifles I used the slimline Peltor electronic muffs, there was an offer posted on here a while back so I got them for 60 quid.

I still can't believe how many shooters don't wear anything in their ears

I didn't, but the forum convinced me otherwise and I realise I was a complete idiot not to!

I don't wear them for shooting rifles though. However I might take them out today, as I'm zeroing an unmoderated .270 hehe

Does anyone know the definitive difference between Peltor Sportacs and Tactical Sports? I ordered a pair of the former but the latter appear to have arrived (black instead of green). Both appear identical and have the recessed cup at the bottom of both ear cups. It has been suggested that Tactical Sports are the US version of Sportacs but I've not been able to independently verify this.

If anyone has the definitive status on this I would very much appreciate them sharing it!

Cheers

Mike

Not wanting to derail the thread, but...

I wear ear protection almost on a reactive basis, if something hurts or I think it may hurt I wear them, I don't worry about how it might look.

If I am shooting my 6.5 on the hill in Scotland I don't, as the sound seems to dissipate down the valley, and if I am honest I actually like the sound, and it never seems loud, unless the 3 of us shoot at once.

At the other end of the scale, I got a ringing in my right ear from repeatedly cracking my flag beating one day, so I wear an ear plug in my right ear if I am asked to 'go down there, and flag like ****'

I picked up some of the Aldi ear defenders today after seeing this thread. I have never used any ear protection but figured it was about time I at least tried something, I can't stand having anything in my ear so for about £16 I thought it would be worth trying the Aldi ones.

They had two versions available, a black pair that said for workshop use and a green pair that says on the box,

''Electronic ear defenders for clay pigeon shooting''

Seem pretty good for the cost - I'll try them out at the weekend and see how they shut out gun noise.

If your after use once and throw away ear plugs i can recommend Multi max ear plugs from Howard Leight Hearing Protection. As a plant operator i use these all the time especially when i was operating Bulldozers etc. These are very good for noise suppression for shotgun and rifle shooting. They come in boxes of 200 so would last quite along time. I don't know how much a box cost because I've never had to buy the one's i have.

Used my Aldi (green ones) as I said before - excellent for powertools. However I took them out roost shooting last night. They are good for noise supression and comfy to wear, I did think they might be a bit bulky but they were fine. They seem to amplify the near sounds lightly above normal (when on full volume) but this advantage does not seem to work on very longrange sounds. There is no direction to the sound which would be an improvement but for £15 quid I am impressed with them, they will go with me to a clay ground next time as I think they will be better than my "in-ear" ones from the point of view of talking between stands and not having to remove my effective in-ear ones (they are so effective I cannot hear anyone talking).
