.223 in the Wind

Hmm...

I've done some searching on here and google and can't quite find an answer (if there is one)

What bullet from either a BTHP or a Softpoint would you favour for foxing on a Windy night?

I'm talking 55grn of Factory ammo for both in .223Rem

I understand that the BTHP's are faster, but would their shape offer a disadvantage over a softpoint in the wind?

Are there any pro's / cons in the choice or is it so small insignificant I shouldn't care?

Answers on a postcard please....

The BTHP is a target bullet so go for the softpoint option.

I'm talking about these puppies Martin..

Their loaded with a gameking BTHP...

For the softpoint option I'm shooting Sako gamepoint 55 grn

Find out the BC of the bullets and there predicted velocity and enter the details into JBM or similar web based ballistics program. It won't give you a complete precise answer, but should help considering your current question is a bit like asking "how long is a piece of string"...........

no expert either, however have done lots (and lots) of testing with the Tikka T3 .223 and i favor the Hornady 60 grain VMax for all my needs fox and permitted deer not much drift so as you would not get a nice clean kill up to 200 yards unless its silly storm factor blow my hat off weather

if both are the same weight then the BT is going to be a longer bullet. Longer bullet = higher BC for a given weight. Then, you said that the BT are faster. Faster = less drop and less deflection. If you really want to minimize wind drift, then the faster BT will be a better choice.

That said, from what I understand of foxing at night you're talking about shooting 250 yards max. The difference between the two isn't going to be an inch.

Thanks

Rick
