PAULT
ive got the chance of a barnard action im getting a 243 for stalking do you think a single shot is a good idea or would a magazine be better thanx
Lloyd90
I think a magazine would be MUCH better for stalking. Single shot is ok for targets but what if you wound the deer and need a quick follow up shot ? Personally I would definately go for a magazine
steve_b_wales
Go for the magazine Paul. Although you will probably hit the deer/fox with one shot, it's always better to have another round ready to hand, just in case. I use a Tikka T3 Lite, an excellent stalking/foxing rifle. If you want to try it, let me know. Steve Edited February 28, 2009 by steve_b_wales

Baldrick
Whilst you can load a single-shot almost as quickly as a mag-fed rifle, Fister raised a very valid point recently: manually feeding introduces all manner of debris and gunge into the chamber. That is not ideal from safety, accuracy and rifle care perspectives.
LeeinVA
These boys all have valid reasons for which type to chose.. I started shooting early and most of my guns came from my grandpa Gil, he figured that i should master the shooting basic before i get fancy so everything was a single shot.. Its like using a digital watch before you learn how to read hands..I still shoot my front stuffers (Black powder Muskets & rifles)more than anything else.. One shot one kill.. You decide mate
wabbitbosher
magazine Every time For a load of reasons WB
njc110381
Magazine would be my choice. Mainly due to the follow up shot being available easily. You may be able to reload a single shot just as fast, but under pressure after a poor shot and maybe in the rain/mud/limited light/wearing thick gloves it is far easier to just cycle the bolt. You can do that without having to look at the rifle, so you don't take your eyes off of your runner. The mag will also hold a supply of clean and dry rounds which you don't have to worry about dropping or damaging when climbing over obstacles. Single shot rifles are supposed to have more rigid actions so are more accurate, but for field use sub MOA is plenty good enough!
