toka_shigazu
Hi...just wondering regarding shotguns what is the better system, if one can be classed as better. Are there any pros or cons regarding either or is it a cost thing? Any advice or information welcome....thanks
Cranfield
The difference between a sidelock and boxlock action, is that the sidelock carries the hammers, springs and sears on the two sideplates. The boxlock hinges the tumblers or hammers, sears and their springs within the action, and the back of the exterior of the action is square to the stock. In the shooting, or mechanical reliability you would not notice the difference, but you would in the price, as sidelocks are more expensive than the equivalent in boxlock. mudpatten
Out of curiosity mate, what make is the gun? Some have what are called side plates. They are essentially boxlocks but with dummy sideplates which makes them look like sidelocks. Sorry to add to your uncertainty. Nick. mudpatten
I`m open to correction here but I think your gun is a sideplated model. Very few inexpensive o/u`s are made with true sidelocks. Those that are are the top of the range with prices to match. Normally, because of the extra time and skill required to build a true sidelock this would be reflected in the price. In the case of your model it should`nt be much more expensive than the equivalent boxlock model, because thats what it is, but fitted with sideplates. Hope the price is right. Enjoy your new gun. toka_shigazu
hi...finally picked up my new gun....can anyone enlighten me on some of the markings found on the barrels... stamped into on barrel is 'CAM .70' [i presume that means 12 bore] further down near the breech is stamped on both barrels '18 4' and on the bottom barrel is KG1.350 [i take it that is the proof] on the underside of the locking points are stamped '4' and '2' [will these refer to the chokes?] and on the barrel and stock metal are stamped with a star in a circle, 'psf' and 'finito' i have been told that this is a 1/4 and half choke gun, which barrel will be which?? as you can see in the picture it has a locking mechanism that i thought was a side lock....i dont think it is now but does anyone know if it has a name... it is a nice solid gun, there appears to be something inside the mechanism that may be lose and on tipping the gun it can be heard falling?? i may have a look inside to see what it is....i will take it out tomorrow to see if i can still hit anything.... any comments welcome....as the shop was very busy i didnt get a chance to ask them many questions... Country_est
hi...finally picked up my new gun....can anyone enlighten me on some of the markings found on the barrels... stamped into on barrel is 'CAM .70' [i presume that means 12 bore] No Means the CHAMBERS are 70mm. and on the bottom barrel is KG1.350 [i take it that is the proof] This is the Pressure rating. on the underside of the locking points are stamped '4' and '2' [will these refer to the chokes?] Dont think so not sure what these mean. and on the barrel and stock metal are stamped with a star in a circle, 'psf' and 'finito' i have been told that this is a 1/4 and half choke gun, which barrel will be which?? Bottom barrel will be the most open choke. as you can see in the picture it has a locking mechanism that i thought was a side lock....i dont think it is now but does anyone know if it has a name... Just looks like a standard boxlock O/U type action. it is a nice solid gun, there appears to be something inside the mechanism that may be lose and on tipping the gun it can be heard falling?? i may have a look inside to see what it is....i will take it out tomorrow to see if i can still hit anything.... Loose things in there can be OK if its apart, but shouldnt be anything moving when its all together. As for the chokes, there should be some kind of stamp rating in Starts ie *. 1 = full 2 = three quaters 3=Half 4 = Quater Trev. Will try to find some other places for you to look but google proof marks should give you a good start. vole
I know it cant be,as AYA are Spanish, but the gun in the pic is the spitting image of my old AYA Yeoman special edition. The little doodad that extends out of the side of the action is the same too as is the engraving, tang etc.
