malamus
Hi. I'd like to get my Shotgun licence as I've been out pigeon shooting with my brother the past couple of months, who's had his licence for around a year. On reading the requirements for a licence, one is that you have to have a safe gun cabinet. This sounds very straight forward and an obvious requirement (who leaves a gun lying around). Problem is this, My missis I'snt to happy about having a gun in the flat, no matter how safe and secure it is, which I can respect. My brother is happy to store a gun for me. So here is the question: To have a gun licence do you have to keep the gun in your own home? Cheers
alexm
It will depend on your police force and circumstances, but I have heard of people having cabinets at other people's houses on the proviso that only you have access to it, i.e your brother cannot have access to keys unless he also has a certificate with your guns listed on it. My missis I'snt to happy about having a gun in the flat, no matter how safe and secure it is, which I can respect. Out of interest though, how can you respect such an irrational demand? Because that's what it is, totally irrational.

malamus
get your cert and then put all your brothers guns on your license and all your guns on his. sorted! That would be ideal, but in order to be granted a cert wouldnt i need a cabinet at my house
Guest
I know some people who keep their guns at their parents house or at the club, as long as the guns are secure and you are the only one with access to them it should be ok.
Billy.
Just keep your gun at a local gunshop or range at cost. It'll be the easiest way to have it without upsetting the missus.
malamus
keeping my gun at a local gunshop sounds good, problem there is I can't be at the field for dawn when (at the moment) the woodies are all over the decoys. (last saturday a few flew less than a meter from the net)
Cosd
The answer to your question is yes, you can get a SGC without a gun cabinet, I got mine like this. What you do with guns on the other hand is a different story. If you only ever shoot with your brother then register the gun on his name, problem solved. My wife felt the same when I started, with time and lots of charm later she came round

J@mes
as others have said, if you explain your plans of storage on your application there is no reason for them to refuse what you want to do I dont think.

danmar94
Before I convinced my dad to let me have my gun in the house I kept it in my friends safe. The FLO was fine with that
Nial
Cheers COSD, thats the arrangement at the mo. he's registered (my) franchi 612vs as his so all is legal when we are out together, just seems silly not to have a licence. When initially approaching the idea of getting a gun with the wife I suggested that I wouldn't have to store any cartridges in the house so in effect all I'd have is two bits of steel pipe welded together in a cabinet in the roofspace. When I got it it only took her a couple of weeks to get used to the idea as she doesn't really ever see it. Then I told her how much more cheaply you can get cartridges in bulk and that was it. Nial.
