jmooney
Hi All, I'm a beginning stickmaker and I'm trying to get a handle on finish (hahaha). I know this can be a bit controversial but what do you use to finish your sticks? Please tell us what you use and your methods Jim
Dunkield
I have only done a few and used linseed oil on them, wiped in with fine wire wool - seemed to work a treat.
AndyCM
I coffee stained & varnished a beating stick last season, looked great until I used it in really wet conditions, then it all peeled, rubbed off. Oil for my next one Cheers AndyCM

deeksofdoom
I'ld use fine sandpaper and the rub down with wire wool and linseed oil to give the stick a very nice smooth finish. Then give it 3 coats of yacht varnish let dry thoroughly in between coats and rub down with fine sandpaper/wire wool. It gives a lovely finish to the stick. Marcus
I dont have any experience with shooting sticks, but pleanty with wood in general (woodturning) My personal preference would be an oil finish every time on wood products (Danish or similar) Its practical, low maintenence should you wish to 're-finish' at some point in the future and will bring out the best the wood has to offer. You could use any oil really, its all in the application, get this right and it will provide excellent results. I suppose the shooting sticks are more functional as opposed to needing to be asthetically pleasing to the eye (im new so correct me if I am wrong) so what finish you use is up to you. If you get a satisfying feeling out of the end product then its a result, if not try another finish next time, go with what you prefer
