Pigeon Problem

Hi,

Now I may be totally off topic for which I apologise but this is my problem.

My next door neighbour likes to feed the birds which attracts blackbirds and the usual but also pigeons for which end up using my fences and decking/paving for their toilet to keep it polite which I'm getting fed up with.

Now I live in an estate, in a town and wanted to know how legal it was to perhaps get a BB gun to shoot the pigeons to hopefully minimise the deposits I end up with in the back garden.

Regards

Chris

A BB gun is not man enough to kill a pigeon cleanly and its use could well result in wounding which would cause uneccessary suffering (itself an offence). Even if you used a more powerful air rifle up to the licence free 12 ft/lb limit there are other problems.

It is only legal to kill woodpigeons under certain conditions. Crop protection where other non lethal methods would be ineffective is OK, but keeping your fence clean is almost certainly not.

If you took shots at pigeons whilst on the fences there would be a high likliehood of shots leaving your boundary which would be an offence under firearms legislation and a danger to your neighbours.

Sorry to be a party pooper, but its a bit of a legal minefield. Could you explain to your neighbour the problems he is causing? He might not realise. It might help if you pointed out that he might also be attracting vermin such as rats.

If he's unreasonable, get a cat to kill the pigeons, and encourage it to **** on his lawn!

Its fair to say a bb gun is not the solution to this problem, you would cause unneccesary suffering to the pigeon and there's also the back drop if you miss ??. You'd be better off explaining your concerns to your neighbour and trying to work out an amicable solutuion, firing a bb gun in a back garden can attract an enquiry from local plod.

A toy gun that fires round, small plastic pellets. :innocent:

Or a low powered air gun, usually smoothbore and often a repeater which fires .177 calibre copper coated steel balls. The US manufacturer Daisy typifying the breed. Either way, not up to the job of humanely despatching a pigeon.

Thanks very much for the responses, it certainly wasnt the way I wanted to go (bb gun) and was aware that their were going to be legal implications. Ive searched on the internet but never got any real information but the idea of an owl decoy sounds quite promising and something I will certainly try.

Any known reputable places that sell these?

Regards

Chris

If your fence is wooden you can buy anti-pigeon spikes that prevent them from landing-i think screw-fix used to sell them-if they are landing inside your garden and fouling your property i cant see why you cannot shoot them as a health and safety issue-give the local boys in blue a ring and ask for advice.Do not try a BB gun-if the police give you the go-ahead im sure you could find somebody who would do the job for you.
