monkeyboots
has anyone ever had a dog with this had a 4mth old springer put to sleep a few days ago i knew he was a small pup but thought that he would like most pups after a week or 2 he would sprout up but instead he was getting skinner by the day no matter what i fed him although he seemed happy and was aways playing about like any pup, so a trip to the vet as i knew deep down sumthing just wasnt right and the vet said that what it was portal systemic shunts he said the dog was more or less starving to death and said PTS was the kindest way the poor we blighter weighed only 3.5kgs , anyway RIP BILLY

GW80
very sad, never actually heard of portal systemic shunts before but don't sound too pleasant.
Blackbart
I think some dogs are prone to it but not normally springers. It can be cured with an operation.

WGD
That's a bad show mate, never actually heard of the condition until now. If there's a positive to be taken from it, it's nice to hear about a responsible breeder acting properly. It wasn't his fault but he seems to have done well by you, good luck with you new pup. al4x
http://www.petshealth.com/dr_library/ps.html this is quite interesting on it, not sure the surgery option as it sounds like a bad option to me bearing in mind the organs affected etc. Sounds like you've done the best thing in the circumstances but must be a bit of a shock
