MEET UP WITH HARNSER

Hi all,

i would like to thank Harnser for taking the time to show me around his pigeon shooting and stalking land and to give me an insight into deer stalking, we met at his house and drove to the farm about 20 minutes away and had a good chat about all things shooting but mainly deer, we spent about an hour driving round and parking in various spots where he pointed out safe and not safe backstops and the sort of places deer would rest up and where they would track to move around the area, we never saw any deer but it was raining so i guess any self respecting deer was sat in the woods out of the worst of it.

When the rain eased off he drove us to his zeroing range and set up a target at 100yds and then showed me the workings of his Ruger .308 and told me about the different ammo in his box before he took a couple of shots of the bonnet of his Disco to show me how it's done, the report from the unmoderated rifle made me jump a bit the first time, it was quite a crack. after that he handed me the rifle and some ammo and asked me to put one through the bottom left 3" target, i slipped the round into the chamber and slid the bolt forward took aim through the scope and let it fly, i was quite surprised at the recoil which i didnt quite expect but the bullet went into the target so i was away, below is a piccy of a 15 shot group i took at the target.

its not going to win any shooting comp but there were no flyers and all the shots were within what would be the heart/lung shot area of a deer so i'm well chuffed, this has now revived my search for a stalking permission which i had almost given up hope of ever getting,

Once again I would like to thank harnser for taking the time to do this for me today, any other PW members who have ever met Harnser will already know what a top bloke he is, cheers Mick

Yes i met up with Mikee today and we had a ride around the farms i shoot on . Mikee is very interested in getting into stalking so i showed him round and pointed out the most likely spots to shoot the deer from . We had a long chat about stalking and it became obvious that Mikee is very keen to have a go .

We then went to the spot that i zero my rifle and Mikee had a few shots with the .308 . As you can see from the target he did very well concidering that it was his first time with a full bore rifle . The target is 3" square and i thought that he did very well so much so that i would have felt confident for him to have had a go at a deer for a heart and lung shot . I enjoyed myself with Mikee and do you know what he is a very nice man .

Nice to know someone is interested in passing on their knowledge and experience to people just starting out.

Mikee if you want to get into stalking you couldn't be in a better part of the country, Norfolk has some amazing sport on offer!

Mikee ,

When i unloaded the car yesterday i found that i had left my cleaning rod behind on the farm . I went over there this morning to find it and drove along the track next to the 5 acre plantation and as i turned the corner at the end of the track there were two roe bucks standing on the grass right where we were zeroing the rifle . **** law ? .

Harnser, thats always the way things happen but i'm kind of glad we didnt see one, although i'm very keen i would really love my first buck to be taken with my own rifle and saying that i'm off to meet a guy tonight who is going to give me permission to shoot deer on his 300acre farm 6 miles down the road, i've been trying to get through to the FLO this afternoon to see if the land is cleared for a deer caliber rifle, the land owner shoots foxes with a .223 but has had an open cert for years and can't remember if it has ever been cleared.

The other day was great and i really enjoyed meeting you, and shooting your rifle was quite an experience and i can't thank you enough for letting me have a few shots, the main thing i gained from the day was just how safety conscious you need to be with a center fire rifle, i was a bit shocked initially just how devastatingly powerful the .308 is, i think to start with i'll opt for .243 not because its any less dangerous as i think they are probably all as lethal to a certain degree, but because i think .243 will be a bit easier to get past the FLO.

Hopefully i will be able to take you up on the mentor offer if it still stands very soon.

Its experienced guys like Harnser who are prepared to share their time and knowledge to help a beginner like myself learn the proper way to do things that make our sport of shooting as great as it is.

Cheers ance again Harnser

Harnser, i met the farmer last night and he has given me permission to shoot deer, vermin and fox on his land and is putting a letter together for me to show the FLO, the land is about 300ac and quite flat other than a couple of slight slopes and dips so the FLO may put a high seat only condition on as well as the mentor condition as there are 1 or 2 cottages in view of the land. On the plus side he has an old sand pit on the farm used for zeroing etc, i will try to speak to the FLO again today and see if the land has been cleared or can be if not.

Ive been looking at rifles on guntrader.co.uk and it looks like the CZ 550 american will be the way forward.

The farmer is also a member of a couple of target rifle clubs and is going to propose me for membership.

listed below are the things i will apply for on my application if ive missed anything could anybody please say so and i'll add it on the list

Mikee ,

The cz will be a fine choice . Looks to me as if you have covered just about everything . Keep me informed as to what is happening . I like the idea of the sand pit to zero the rifle in . we will have you shooting as good as Tom mix (not many on here will remember Tom mix ) .
