Switzerland

Recommended Posts

Switzerland requires every male over the age of 20 to own an assault rifle (specifically SIG 550 in 5.56 cal.). In one study by David Kopel of seven countries, including the United States and Japan, Switzerland is found to be one of the safest countries in the study. In recent times political opposition has expressed a desire for tighter gun regulations. Switzerland practices universal conscription, which requires that all able-bodied male citizens keep fully-automatic firearms at home in case of a call-up. Every male between the ages of 20 and 42 is considered a candidate for conscription into the military, and following a brief period of active duty will commonly be enrolled in the militia until age or an inability to serve ends his service obligation. During their enrollment in the armed forces, these men are required to keep their government-issued selective fire combat rifles and semi-automatic handguns in their homes. Up until September 2007, soldiers also received 20 rounds of government-issued ammunition in a sealed box for storage at home. In addition to these official weapons, Swiss citizens are allowed to purchase surplus-to-inventory combat rifles, and shooting is a popular sport in all the Swiss cantons.

You, like so many people have this completly wrong.

The reason that Switzerland has such a low crime rate, is alot less to do with them all owning guns.

What it is mostly to do with, is the forcing of common sense and morality from military service.

Upon what are you basing your evidence then? There is an old saying, what can't speak can't lie. Every house has guns, low crime rate and few gun crimes. End of.

And what is this commen sence of which you speak, a new concept on me I'm afraid

morality from military service.

Might explain some of the males, but what about female and male pre military service? We have ex soldiers here who commit crime. Only last week in Yorkshire an ex soldier was arrested for having a bomb factory in his house along with illegal firearms and hand grenades, no morality there lad

Being pretentious to everyone who disagrees with you is truly the spirit of the internet!.

Anyways,

All switzerland teaches us is that the best way to reduce gun misuse is to promote responsible gun ownership.

Dont argue about it boys . The fact is that most households have an automatic assault rifle stood in the corner and burglars are reluctant to break in . Dosent really matter for what reason ,it just works and keeps the scum out of your house .

As the late great Jef cooper from guns and ammo used to say . If it was printed next to your telephone number in the phone book that you were a gun owner ,we would see who would be robbed in their home .

Harnser .

Exactly, but Bleeeeeeeeeeeeh thinks that the good people of this country need to be told by the thieving cheating lying politicians who is worthy to hold a gun license and who isn't. I wouldn't trust them to step out in the rain and tell me it's wet

Don't blame me, you voted for in all the politicians who are in power at the moment.

I believe that there has to be some sort of system of forced responsible ownership with firearms, just as you do with anything else (Cars, Certain Chemicals, etc).

I also think this issue has to be discussed with more open-mindedness rather than what we are having at the moment.

The real problem I feel with a free-for-all with firearms, is the same problem you would have if you let there be no such thing as a driving licence, - even if everyone was sensible and paid attention, people would still crash, people have the habit of being arrogant about subjects, but when there is a system that actively stops them considering doing something stupid, you'll find it happens allot less.

I'm not trying to argue with the effects of legal firearms for self defence, I'm simply trying to argue that there for safeties sake - for the sake of teaching responsible and safe gun ownership and treatment to quarry, that we continue to have the system we do now.

As for Switzerland.

I honestly can’t say I believe they have the lowest murder rate because everyone has guns. To say this is true is to say that murders are done by level-headed intelligent people who think out the situation before hand.

Ask yourself, why does America have School shootings, but Switzerland does not? Why do you have someone who walks into a church and starts shooting, but not in Switzerland (which is a very Catholic Country in parts)?

I don’t think it is down to simple fact people have guns. The psychology of people, and what makes them crack and shoot a school full of children down, must have something else to do with the difference between nations and lifestyle.
