Ferret Master
Hi, After a disasterous and embarrasing performance on the clays at a new club last night I got dropped off at home at about 8:30pm. Upon walking through the door I announced to my taxi service I was going bunny bashing a quarter of an hours drive away and would need a lift there and back. Enthusiastic is not the word that could be used to sum up my Dad's reply. Nope, not one bit. Hasty arrangements/negotiations/promises to tidy my room so you can see the carpet again were made and by 8:45pm we were in the car having hastily grabbed a pasty, my rifle, pellets, pump and suitable clothing. Arrived at Stillsy's by 9pm and after confirming that his lab still hates me, pumping the gun up and checking on his pheasants we were ready for the off. We walked into a paddock and counted approximately a dozen rabbits of various sizes mulling around the base of a large oak tree which is also a bury and along a hedgeline. Stillsy suggested to my surprise that we lay out in the middle of the field which sloped downwards slightly away from the bury with our guns on the pods/storage pallet to break up our outline. We did this and about quarter of an hour later our first customers re-emerged. We waited for some that weren't the size of golf balls to emerge and as planned I counted down from 3-2-1 FIRE! I nailed my first rabbit with a clean headshot which was replied by '**** didn't hear you whispering!' before Stillsy rolled his first of the evening as well. A couple of minutes passed before Stillsy lined up one against the base of the tree. Unfortunately this one dropped its head to eat just as he fired so the pellet missed over the top and hit the tree. I followed up with a quick shot and we had our third of the evening. I then lined up another about 35 yards away and after calculating the holdover I dropped him to have our 4th of the evening. We then decided to split up and head to different parts of an adjoining field to cover 2 different warrens. No rabbits reappeared when I tucked myself up but I heard 2 shots from the other warren, after it got too dark to see through the scope I noticed Stillsy moving so I went over to join him. We picked one but couldn't find the other even though it was hard hit. His terrier was dispatched to see if she could find it but to no avail. We decided to call it a night at this point leaving plenty for another go later on. I then got 'the call' asking whether I was ready to be picked up. Finished gutting and skinning them about midnight and bunny burgers will be processed tomorrow. B) Cheers for a nice productive little session mate. Just have to get our target by the end of the holidays! FM Edited June 18, 2009 by Ferret Master
