Hard time of year.

Am I the only one finding it hard pigeon shooting at the moment ?

Perhaps I should add that its not been a good Spring for me.

Now all of the rape fields are in bloom, its easy to se how spoilt for choice the birds were this Winter.

First there were the big berry, beech mast and acorn crops, now it also seems that there are more rape fields than ever, down in the south of Kent.

At the moment the birds seem to be in quite small groupings, no more than 10-20 maximum.

Despite putting the time in, I can't find any areas being visited regularly, or with any commitment.

If anyone can locate large amounts of hungry pigeons, please tell me where, I am prepared to move home.

Seriously though, I was back in Scotland last week and all the Pigeon boys I spoke to around D& G have had a **** spring, four guys I know who have the shooting on a 20k acre estate, have had nowt, birds in big bunches all through, they haven't made a decent bag between them. The mate I generally shoot with has done nowt, two seasons ago we had several 100+ days and one of 252 on the drillings. Maybe the big pigeon numbers are being dented, let's get them on the protected list!! So your not the only one having a tough time of it.

I went fishing instead last week.

Same here cranfield I've shot ****** all this year due to the lack of pigeons feeding on the crops. I don't think for one minute there is a shortage of birds, I think they will start to appear in numbers at harvest time but fingers crossed we may have some look soon.

:< Have only seen pigeons in large numbers once this year and that was on freshly drilled beans a couple of months ago. Wasn't one of our farms so we had to find the owner who, after a long session of small talk gave us the go ahead.

Trouble was that when we got back to the field, two of his regular shooters were well into setting up so we didn't have a shoot. :<

This has been the quietest autumn, winter and spring for many years in these parts and is pretty much the same as I have been reading from other members regarding plenty of birds but far too much alternative food for them.

Roll on harvest time although we said roll on spring drillings didn't we!!
