banjobill
hi guys got my FAC last month and have got my .22lr however the FEO said that i could not have a big rifle straight away as i have limited acerage and no experience of rifles. When i apply for my variation what should i apply for? it will be used for culling Red Roe CWD Muntjac and foxes. i have heard that the .243 can be a bit on the small side for serious red culling and i was wondering about a .270 is this a good caliber for what i want? in the future i may get a .22 centerfire soly for foxes and possibily for muntjac too but withlimited finances i want 1 good rifle not two rubbish ones cheers banjo bill
Ackley
a 243 with the correct bullet will be fine, why buy 2 rifles when 1 will do,just get a good quality 243 and scope use it for vermin and for deer, just change the bullet to suit IE vermin use anyhting form 58 gr to 70 gr for red 90 to 100 gr
casts_by_fly
or go a bit bigger and just be covered for whatever you want. There is no 'overkill', just underkill. A 6.5x55, 260, 270, 280, 7mm-08, 7x57, 308, or 30-06 would all do the job for you. I assume you'll be shooting factory loads anyway, so they will all cost about the same. Then a 22 centerfire in the future wouldn't be overlapping anything (as it would with a 243). Thanks, Rick

No matter what weight bullet you use on a fox you are going to blow it up . A 100 grn bullet isnt to much power for the smaller deer . But in my humble opinion the 100 grn .243 bullet is lacking a little on the big lowland red stags . You have to see these beasts to see how big they are or to drag one out of the woods . Again in my humble opinion the .243 is not the best one gun stalkers rifle . I have said it a hunderd times on this forum that the .308 with a 150 grn bullet is proberbly the best one gun combination for all european big game . Harnser . Highlander
however the FEO said that i could not have a big rifle straight away as i have limited acerage and no experience of rifles. cheers banjo bill IMO you'd best be getting that experience and a whole lot more acres before thinking about a variation to a BIG rifle! Bleeh
been told by college that its best to have all the hardware before applying for a job banjo bill True, but it'll be bloody cheaper to just get a single rifle. You'll be looking at £200-300 + £100-300 for a good Rifle/Mod/Scope combo mix, and if you really want to unnessicarly double the amount of money you are going to spend... groach1234
When i went stalking my stalker told me in he had literally taken thousands of Red Deer (stags and hinds) with his trusty .243 with 100 gr bullets and i have no reason to disbelieve him in the amount he had taken as he was a full time game keeper on stalking estates and had taken part in really large scale culls in which he could take 10+ a day along with 7 or 8 other stalkers doing the same for 3 or 4 days so from what i know if you have the experience the .243 would be fine.
