.243

Recommended Posts

The simple answer is, yes, you can get a .243 for fox and vermin, but it depends on the attitude of your FEO. As it would be your first application for a centrefire, you may find yourself pushed towards a .222/.223/.22-250 (all of which will kill a fox as effectively as the .243).

Shooting a centrefire is cracking fun though, isn't it?

If its just for fox why .243 ? I use .223. I tend to find the .223 just as effective as .22-250 and .243. Only reason I can see you wanting to go for anything bigger than .223 is if you are shooting over 300 yards regulary and then the .22-250 fills the position perfectly.

If you were wanting a duel purpose fox / deer calibre then .243 would definately be the order of the day but as you arent wanting to shoot deer then maybe consider the smaller calibres as ammo is cheaper, and in the case of the .223 recoil is hardly noticable and you can easily see your bullet hit home

If you really fancy it then go for it but have you tried .223 or .22-250 yet to get a comparison ?

Sid, with respect, hitting crows at 500 yards is testing stuff and not something you are likely to be able to achieve consistently with an off-the-shelf .243. You need a a good deal of theoretical knowledge, married up with a lot of experience behind the trigger and in front of the reloading press. It's not a simple matter of 'point and squeeze'.

if you are adamant that you want .243 just put deer on your application, if they impose dsc1 or supervised for deer it doesnt really matter if youre never going to go after deer at least you've got the rifle you wanted and maybe you will change your mind in the future, just because its on your ticket its not compulsory to shoot deer

Agreed dont get me wrong i in no way wish to demean your skill behind a rifle but if it is your first time, you should perhaps be looking to learn to crawl before you attempt to sprint a 500 yard crow conssitently is no mean feat factory ammo in .243 probably cant even achieve it so before you start attempting stuff the rifle is struggleing to achieve you should build you skill, what i mean by that is do you know where to shift your point of aim for wind and bullet drop at 500yards can you consistantly hit a 3 inch circle at 500 yards if you answer no to any of these you wont be able to shoot a crow consistently at 500 yards and will probably have many months of building upto it (just because a rifle is capable doesnt mean you will be).

Yes...you can, my FEO is among some of the most lenient I have heard of...I got it for Deer, Fox and Vermin...but you can use it for Fox and Vermin...you can get heavier bullet weights for the .243 but the .223 and the 22/250's will kill just as good.

As I have one .243 I have the problem of zeroing for Fox 55gr or 75gr or Deer 100gr.
