pigeons on combined rape

I had a phone call from a farmer on friday evening saying he was combining the Rape and about 100-150 pigeons were dropping in behind him. I thanked him for the info and told him we would be out at the weekend.

Saturday

The morning was a No,No as I was moving my daughter's furniture etc to her new house. This was in the drizzle we had right up till lunch time. After I had finished I rang my hoppo up to see how he was fareing and he said it was ******* down and he was driving back home. That was the day over.

Sunday

I was up at 03.45 am and met up with my mate to go to one of his farms to try and sort a fox problem out for him.

We arrived at the farm at 04.30am and I loaded the rifle as we entered just in case. As we drove into the field there was the fox just about to enter the barns and he spotted us and bolted across the field to the far bank. He stopped about 135 yards away and turned to look at us just long enough for me to take a shot. I missed by an inch or so; not allowing enough for the crosswind and off he shot.

Damn. I will get him another morning.

I then set up on a field of wheat that was being battered by the blackies, whilst my mate went to pick up the boys and a surprise visitor. After a couple of hours I had shot 38 and then packed up ready to nip off to look for the pigeons.

The jeep arrived shortly after, with the boys and visitor and we drove off to the rape field in question Upon arrival there, we only spotted a few dropping in and moved off 1/2 mile away to some more cut rape. There were quite a few dropping in and we set up the boys in a hide and went back to the 1st field.

I was to be in the hide with the surprise visitor, who I was informed by my mate ? that he was a TOPSHOT and in the England Squad. Shooting ex 98 in SPORTING !!!!!!!!.

Cheers mate !!!!!!!!!!!!!! nothing like a bit of pressure eh?

Anyway, I give him his due, as he held up quite well shooting alongside me.

Only joking Neil. . More like the other way round. He did start to miss a couple as my mate returned to watch us from the jeep. I am allowed to miss some(as I ain't in the England squad)

We finally ended up with 34 pigeons; had a good laugh and learnt a lot from each other.

:good:

121 pests less for the farmers to worry about.

Well done lads. :good:

They are starting to show a lot more interest in rape around here now. I had a guy shoot 120 on a swathed field yesterday, his frield also shot 59 for 250 shots at the other end of the same field.

I also saw my first rape stubble up here but sadly not one of mine!

This summers running total - 1495 woodies.

Cheers,

Mark.
