Pike Fishing Question

Right lads after some advise here

Myself and Zipplex are planning a Pike fishing trip next week, which should be good fun. (On the Huntspill)

I have just been digging all the gear out this morning but i dont know which way to go this time of year

I have a brand new Dam 7ft spinning rod 5 to 20grms and my JW Six shooter reel, i was thinking about spinning the lure for these beast,s but im not 100% sure about the spinning rod....

Never used one before and im wondering if they are up to pulling in a Pike on them ? they just look so flimsy against the carp rods

In the past i have used the Carp rod and used dead bait on a float rig....

Anyone got any ideas on which way to go please....

(Im hopefully Mackeral fishing tomorrow for some bait)

Cheers

How stiff is the spinning rod? If it has a good bit of backbone to it, and you use strong braid (30lb would balance that outfit well) you can use it for pike.

What matters here is you need to know you can get the pike in quickly, as in summer they can fight themselves to a standstill and then you have a hard time getting them back in the water and safely swimming away. Sorry if that is teaching granny to suck eggs :good: but I have seen pike released when not ready, and they turn belly up and float off downstream to die.

30lb braid works really well on a light/medium lure outfit as it is the same diameter as much lighter mono, and gives you a good chance you'll get your lure back if you snag up. Just remember not to wrap it round your hand to pull it though, it cuts really deep...

In most cases (not all before any jumps in) spinning will produce more jacks than 'real' pike so that rod would be fine for the smaller fish.

I built an ultralight spinning rod from an old fly rod and it will cast anything from about 15 grams down to about a gram if such a thing existed.

I tried it out last time we went and caught a 1lb jack almost first cast (with 6lb mono on the reel) that was fine until a pike of about 7-8lb grabbed that one :good:

Luckily it got off but I reckon with the current and good fight from 2 fish it would have snapped the rod.

You can get fairly good spinning rods pretty cheap if you find the fish are bigger than expected IMO you should get one of those, but the Americans will disagree with that as they love big fish/light tackle.

You don't need a carp rod just something with a bit of backbone if required.

the rod will get you through ; i landed my personal best pike of 26lb 10oz on a 6ft lightweight rod, it took a while but was good fun, yes, ideally i would have had a more powerful rod with me, but this was all i had in the boot of my car. i went down the route of a 'bait caster' style set up with multiplier (one the the JW 6 shooter jobbies), but found it more hassle than it was worth. I now do most spinning / sink and draw on a 9ft shimano spinning rod, (up to 75g casting weight) and an old shimano reel loaded with 60lb braid, if you havent already tried braid for spinning - do so - it is a different world to using mono, just have to make sure the clutch is set with enough give - the braid wont break but it might pull the hooks free. It will pay for itself in a couple of outings with the amount of lures you wont end up losing. It also casts much further :good:

ps - another must have is a titanium trace! no kinks, lasts for ages, i have 20lb breaking strain split rings on the hooks as well, so they go before anything else and you get your lure back.

just like to say IMHO Pike are a very good target fish but you must be ready for them and have the gear, Having spent many years on the Waveney and taken them to 30lb, I have seen quite a few killed mostly due to deep hooking, or poor handling when caught (what do i do with it now) what ever you do plz hit early if float fishing and if anyone tells you count to 30 and strike they want a treble in the harris, good luck

Got to admit, i dont like leaving the strike for to long, as i find most times the hook are deeper and harder to get out on any fish, but very good point.

Yep will get down to veals over the weekend and get some Braid, think i will take the spinning rod for the lures and the carp rod for the dead bait (Mackeral).

Thanks guys for all the advise, cant wait for Weds to be honest it should be a good day out

Thanks

if its the dam rod with the pistol grip for one hand casting , be carefull only use really light lures !! i have broke two of these rods now really crappy made !

No it does not have a pistol grip, just the normal cork handle.

I brought this a few years back at the fishing show at the NEC, I wanted the JW spinning rod, but for some reason they were not selling them on the day so i went to the Dam stand and got one of these.

It was purchased for lure fishing for Pike at the time, as we were planning on going back to ireland but never got there

In that case are you sure it is built to use a multiplier/baitcaster style reel? If not, you would be best sticking to fixed spool as there might not be enough rings, or perhaps rings at all the wrong places.

livebait is deadly mate!!! providin u are allowed to use it on that water!!!

The bigger fish (all females) prefer a lazy dead bait to chasing a lives, on avg expect to pick up more big fish this way if you can put the bait near drop offs, holes, reeds etc

:birthday: .......i've only just noticed this :friends: , i'm going to take a little single handed spinning rod with small ABU multiplier/braid, a stiffish 7ft Daiwa spinning rod and a softer bass rod/fixed spool. I guess i'll be covered that way. I need to get a few spoons to take but has anyone tried the Tobimaru/Rapala type floating/diving lures for pike that you'd ordinarily use for bass? reason I ask is i've got a box full and fancied giving them a go.

Advice on the above appreciated as I don't want to look a plonker in front of Spaniel :drinks: , it's like the blind leading the blind but rest assured the fish will get treated properly if we latch into any :birthday:

Ziplex give them lures ago as sometimes the pike will be lying deep and other times up in the water, it all depends where the bait fish are swimming. Good luck fishing

Thanks for that, I must have two dozen of various types, some shallow divers, some deep, some without a lip etc. so I should be able to get the depth right at least B)

It's your fault if we don't :P .......as I didn't know your address when getting the licences today you now officially live at my address ;) , also you don't have a surname 'cause I didn't know that either  , glad you have packed a landing net, where mine is I don't know and believe me i've looked. I bought some spinning and deadbait traces and a couple of basic spoons so I reckon we'll hit 'em for six! If you're getting the deadbait we'll call it evens on the licence :|

I'll give you a ring tomorrow to arrange a meet up time.

if you can try and get used to 'handing' the pike in - i only use a net now where you cannot get down to the water - you will quickly find that treble hooks, especially on lures that tend to be on the edge of the jaws will get hopelessly stuck in a net.

there are two 'ridges' underneath the jaws which allow you to get a good hold onto the fish ; they also (once lay backwards) will allow you to hold the jaws open quite easily to remove the hooks. good luck - i really must get some more piking done this year - last year shooting took all of my time. ;)

Most of the bank you can access the waters edge so i'll bear this in mind, thank you.
