throdgrain
The 500 is a great gun for any type of shooting, though I think I'd stick with 12 bore personally.

aaron airgunner
are pump guns hard to clean as i have been told you need to clean your barrels after every shooting session. after being told that i would get some funny looks on a pheasent shoot with a pump gun would it be better to go for an o/a/u or a s/b/s. if so which one a s/b/s look cheaper but o/a/u seem to be more popular. ATB Aaron To be honest-i dont think you'd be allowed on a formal pheasant shoot with a pump! O/U's and SxS's are the chosen types for formal shooting and no one would raise an eyebrow with them. aaron airgunner
btw how loud is a moderated .410 and would they be useful for decoying and generaly walking about? i either get a cheap moderated .410 or go the whole hog and get a 20g pump gun and save up for a moderator after that. or i could get a s/s or o/u. please, i need some guidance! my situation: i need a gun which can take down rabbits, pigeon & pheasies with relative ease, as well as bust clays to 40 yards. it needs to be quiet so i dont disturb anyone when out shooting and because i think a quiter gun would allow you to get more in the bag. so o/u, s/s, pump gun, 20g or .410. which would be ideal? oh and it needs to be under £400 idealy. ATB Aaron. edited to say: it needs to be easy to clean. Edited August 22, 2009 by aaron airgunner

ATB Aaron Regarding pheasant shoots It's the safety aspect usually quoted, an open gun is obvious to all as safe since it cannot be fired , which cannot be said with a pump or semi auto (OK pedants how many of you have bought the new Beretta S/A that opens?) if you clay shoot and somebody is waving S/A about whether loaded or not you would be justified in asking them to behave responsibly or leave because the potential risk makes folk nervous even if they know all 3 shots have been fired. S/A and Pumps are not that difficult to clean in fact you have 50% fewer barrels to run the brush and patches through tho' gas operated S/A's have the gas port and mechanism that needs to be kept clean but routine cleaning is 'simples' I suppose if you get down to picky then the ejector mechanism on S/S and OU's are a royal pain to strip and it takes ages searching when those tiny springs ping out but thats a job that doesn't get done very often if at all. Which one to buy ? well get out there and try a few before you decide, there are a lot of myths and prejudices aired but one fact the gun you are happy and comfortable with is the one that you will shoot best, I can clay shoot with any out of the cabinet and my scores were remarkably similar in the days when I 'did a bit'
