lead shot and wetlands

Hi guys I am sure that you are all aware of the change in regulations but just thought that I would flag this any how. You can find out more on the basc website.

It gives a definition of wetlands and some people might be surprised to find that when they go rough shooting they may find that they need to have an alternative type of cartridge in their bag.

At the moment i believe its the only police that do checks, with aid off a mobile scanner. i haven't heard anyone else as off yet.

Which in this part off the world isn't something that would be welcomed im sure. :sly:

BUT YES no one has the right.................. :(

i was told the psni will be checking anyone they come across out shooting, and i kid you not 2 shooters near me had a helicopter land with them yesterday as they walked a river it was the police looking for 4 boys poaching a different strech of river they asked to see their FAC and asked to see what shells they had in the gun , the 2 lads said they would ring the farmer 2 say they had permission and said the police could ring the farmer but the police said its ok its not you where looking for and they took off again, now ive heard of the helicopter after boys digging badgers and know of boys who got caught whilst digging when the helicopter landed with the psni and surprise surprise that **** from the USPCA philpott was with them so need to be careful lads that this philpott man isnt behind this trying to enforce the lead shot ban,

can ducks, geese etc be shot with lead shot if they are not near wetlands?

The reason I ask this is I have a flight path directly behind my house, they are landing in a neighbours pond. My neighbour (same neighbour and his son) and I intend to have a few goes at the ducks this year as apparently there are way too many drakes this year on the lough, anyone heard anything similar? But we can shoot in my field over green fields shooting away from the pond. Is it ok to shoot with lead shot in this case.?

is their any water in these fields at all, anytime off the year, ie seasonal.:sly:?:good:?:D??

here ya go, this should clear it up..

The Environmental Protection (Restriction on Use of Lead Shot) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2009

The actual regulations can be found online at http://www.opsi.gov.uk/sr/sr2009/nisr_20090168_en_1, but in plain English, the effect is as follows:

1.

From 1st September, it will be illegal to shoot with a shotgun using lead shot on or over wetlands, irrespective of the species you are shooting – even vermin and ground game are included in this, and it includes coastal areas as well as inland wetlands.

2.

‘Wetlands’ includes all areas of permanent running or still water, and also temporary wetlands and peatlands.

3.

‘Temporary wetlands’ means wetlands that are covered by water on a seasonal or regular basis, and ‘peatlands’ is restricted to peatlands with visible water.

The actual wording used in the regulations may be of some help:

“…. wetlands are areas of marsh, fen, peatland or water, whether natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, with water that is static or flowing, fresh, brackish or salt, including areas of marine water the depth of which at low tide does not exceed six metres.”

A fine of up to £1000 may be imposed if you are convicted under these regulations, so you need to take this very seriously.

In most cases, members will be able to change to steel shot (note that since steel is lighter than lead, you will need to compensate by using one shot size larger than your old lead shot size) Anyone using an older gun should check with their gunsmith to make sure it is safe for them to use steel shot – many old guns will not be able to handle these safely.

Other shots types are available – such as tungsten and bismuth – these should be safe in older guns, but will be much more expensive than steel shot – up to five times the cost!

It might be useful to note that the offence is in shooting on or over wetlands – this means that care needs to be exercised even if you are shooting near a wetland area that there is no chance of the lead shot falling on the wetland – but it also means that you should be able to shoot close to the boundary of the wetland, provided you are not shooting over it.The Environmental Protection (Restriction on Use of Lead Shot) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2009

as said i was shooting away from the pond and 3 small fields from the pond. But with the weather that we are having and the fact that there are sheughs and streams everywhere in the countryside it might mean that any body out rough shooting would need to have a few steel shot in his pocket just in case. I notice that it is recommended to use 2 sizes bigger and use more open chokes when shooting steel. any thoughts on that or anyone any eperience of this.

i know most places i go for rough shooting have streams/rivers/flooded fields marshy rashy fields etc so it would seem id mayabe be better to just use steel shot all the time instead of lead

:sly:

theres only one place i can think of where i shoot that doesnt have a small stream or ditch, so i suppose at this time of year with the place being so wet thered more running water about than usual. think its going to have to be steel only from now on :good:
