Gareth W
I have been looking at Schmidt and Bender 8 x 56 fixed scopes and there is a big difference in price between the German assembled and the Hungarian assembled scopes. How much difference between the 2 is there? Cheers Gareth
Glensman
I have one of each in the 6x42. To me they seem to be as good as each other. All the parts are made in the Hungarian factory, but some scopes are assembled in Germany and others in hungary...
Shootingman
Hungarian workforce earn less than Germans.
TheHunter
I had a look through both without being told which was which and could not see any difference. It all comes down to how much you pay someone to put it together. Both very good if you have to point out you have the German built scope, you are just a snob LOL
Glensman
if you have to point out you have the German built scope, you are just a snob LOL As I say I have them both and I cannot tell a single difference, in fact I got them for the same price too

rjimmer
I seem to remember the same sort of discussion about Zeiss scopes and binoculars made in East or West Germany.
DaveK
If I recall the only differences are the wording on the scope and that variable scopes are not available in the Hungarian form unfortunately.
Baldrick
I seem to remember the same sort of discussion about Zeiss scopes and binoculars made in East or West Germany. You're thinking of Carl Zeiss Jena and the Zeiss Group, before the Berlin Wall came down. I believe the former was absorbed into the Docter Optics brand, and the latter became Zeiss as we know it today.
rjimmer
You're thinking of Carl Zeiss Jena and the Zeiss Group, before the Berlin Wall came down. I believe the former was absorbed into the Docter Optics brand, and the latter became Zeiss as we know it today. I think Docter may have bought the Jena factory intact. Zeiss is still at the Oberkochen factory, as far as I know. 40 years since I saw it though. Edited September 11, 2009 by rjimmer
