Harnser
Noticed the other day and today that there is a good crop of acorns on the farms . Noticed some pigeons on the young rape under some oaks . Not sure if they were interested in the rape or the acorns as I havent shot the rape yet . I f you have oak trees on your farms its worth a look to see if the birds are after the acorns . Harnser .
henry d
On another tack, I saw a load of beechmast, in town, and there was very little in the way of seed inside. Swings and roundabouts perhaps ??
MerseaDavid
The last 3 or more years have been poor for acorns but this year looks like it might be good It will be harder to find them on the rape though unless it has got some good oak trees on it. mr salt
How the hell a pigeon eats a acorn god only knows. i have shot pigeons full of the things. its hard to get your head around how a pigeon full of acorns at the end of the day, can have digested them all by morning? i have been out early in the morning, shot them and there crops are empty, when the night before they were stuffed with acorns. if you get a pigeon you have shot and try to put a acorn in its mouth ,you will understand what i mean? it dont fit! cheers scott
borntoshoot
i dont know if this is correct but i have seen pigoens on my grandparents flat roof and if you scare them off you can see on the room big splats of sick like stuff and its obvious that it has come from the crop because it looks exactly the same only slighty digested, now i wonder if they regurgitate (spelling) it and then eat it again because i vahe seen sloe's, tiny little apples and the like in the crop of pigoens before. anser2
Plenty of acorns my way too Hanser , though the pigeons are still using the stubbles. Last time we had a bumper acorn crop I was flighting pigeons stuffed with acorns. In a strong wind the birds were coming at me head high across a grass field , giving head on shots. Some died as I meant them to , but a number though hit struggled off into the trees. I thought I had a duff batch of cartridges until I realised the head on targets had a armour padding of acorns in their bulging crops. Unless I hit them in the head or broke a wing the pellets were stopped by the acorns.
