Lloyd90
Really enjoying having Skye she has settled in lovely into the family Although my mother mentioned maybe getting another dog as she will have some company when alone. She also currently is in the house most the time but with another dog I would feel alot better Kenneling her full time with the other dog. Was thinking of a springer spaniel, any thoughts ? Would have to be a bitch ofc so they dont end up doing the naughty Would this combination be alright ? Also one thing is she LOVES other dogs, she really loves playing and running with them. Someone told me don't get another dog as you would "lose her" because she'd always be focus'd on the other dog and not on me is there any truth in this ? Or will be grow out of her dog obsession as she gets older ? If there's another dog or even person she LOVES to go up n say hello to them. Its nice but sometimes a bit annoying lol! 3 terriors attacked her before (they ran upto her not her to them before someone starts) but she hasnt been put off in the slightest shes dog mad lol
alexr
We had the same dilemma. my retriever has had to have surgery and has become less mobile as a result, because of this he was gaining weight which made him even more immobile. although at least one of us is home most days, we also felt that the company would do him good. We got a Springer bitch. The two of them get on really well. He has been done (the reason for the surgery has a genetic cause), but that has not stopped him going through the motions during her season. I think because of the age difference we have not lost him, but she is MAD. She is only one year old, and still has to mature, but she is not steady. If there is an interesting smell she is off. The energy of this little dog can best be summed up by one single fact. She will no stand still, even defecation is done on the run. Don't get a Springer if you are going to leave her for any length of time on her own, even if you have an outside run.
Lloyd90
Don't get a Springer if you are going to leave her for any length of time on her own, even if you have an outside run. Why's that mate ? I know people who leave there Springers and there fine I really would prefer a spaniel and cockers seem to be twice as much as a springer so I was eaning towards one of them lol Besides there's always someone home except for fridays when they would be left for about 8 hours apart from that they would have company every day I might just wait until Skye is older n has pups n then just keep one Edited September 16, 2009 by Bigthug87
ShaggyRS6
Don't get a Springer if you are going to leave her for any length of time on her own, even if you have an outside run. Firstly i would not get a Dog full stop if its gonna be left on its own consistently over long periods. But that's just me. Secondly my ESS, who is, as mad as a hatter can be left in doors all day (on the rare occasion we have had too) and is totally fine. Never chewed, soiled etc and so on. We have just introduced a new 15 month Old Lab into the house. They get on just fine. Took all of 4 days to figure out who boss was. Now they play like they have known each other for years. My ESS also got on really well with our first dog Jack (RIP) again, they were like brother and sister. Just my experiences. I would point out that I would not leave the lab in doors on her own at this point in time. The ESS at 15 months was fine. The lab i have no doubt would find something to chew!!!! rickyspringer
ESS are perfect dogs, I now have 2 a dog and a bitch, will be seperated when bitch is in season. Think Skye may be a little young to introduce another pup as it may have a bad effect on the training, but anything else it would be B) Think a lab and ESS together would be perfect, would be good company when out. I wish you good luck with it all mate, twice the hard work but twice the fun. stay intouch buddy and let us know how you get on!!!
Lloyd90
As said neither will be left for long periods except on a friday as it seems inevitable. Apart from that there will always be someone about B) I will be waiting until Skye is older and better trained, maybe when she's about 1 year old

I've always had pairs of springers (tho currently a Lab a Springer and a German Shepherd) and they play like kids piling up toys bones etc and stealing them back. The plus is when you get them working together as a team the amount of game they flush is amazing. alexr
[Don't get a Springer if you are going to leave her for any length of time on her own, even if you have an outside run. Sorry I did mean to give you a reason for this at the time, but it was 3 am and I had a patient coming in and rushed it. It is just my own experience, and I don't know if others have experiences similar, but my ESS appears to be very bright compared to my retriever. She is very active and, I think because the retriever is always there and we are nearly always there she does suffer from what I think is separation anxiety. She is house trained and on the whole that is not a problem, but on the very few occasions when she has been left alone, she has been quite destructive, mostly to books and soft furnishings. I also have to say that it has been some time now since we have had a problem, but i do not know if that has been because she has matured or if it is because she has not been left on her own. At the moment I am not inclined to temp fate to find out which it may be.
