had a call from the farmer

well it was a text actually just sounds better hehe

it just said,

" Colin loads of rabbits up middle hill can you go and have a look"

thought to myself a job for the .22lr and the night vision :yes:

so Sunday evening about 1 hour before dark i went for a stroll along said hill and by 10pm i had 17 bunnies in the bag,

but this post is not about Sunday evening it's about today's shoot,

i did notice before dark that there was a lot of fresh scratchings along the hedge that travels about 500 yards along a ditch at the bottom of the hill,

i know they were fresh as the farmer was discing the field Sunday day time and they were there Sun evening so the rabbit's had to of been out during the day,

also on reaching the said hedge row i did notice a quarry that i have not stalked for nearly a year now,

so i thought to myself i will pop back today for a wonder,

after reading a thread off here about favourite gun for a wonder i thought it would be a good chance to take the 12g out as i have not taken it out since February and i have 2000 cartridge's sat under my bed that have not been touched and with the chance of bolting rabbits possible pigeon and crow i filled my cartridge belt and both fleece pockets with cartridges ready for the off,

the fields i was heading for are only half a mile from my house so i thought leave the car at home and go for a walk,

so gun broke down and in my short rod bag (i use it when walking through village so know one knows its a gun in there) a cool bag with drink and sandwich also to carry quarry home,

left my house about 11am and it was drizzling but quite warm,

about 200 yards up the road it started to rain heavier but hey i am a shooter of all season's so a bit of rain won't hurt lol

by the time i reached the fields i was totally soaked boot's were full of mud and weighing half a ton each but i pressed on,

i got to the hedgerow were there was a good chance of rabbits and my chosen quarry i was getting quite excited about,

so i slowly made my way along the hedge hoping for a bolting bunny but nothing showed, i could see over on another field there was a decent pigeon flight line and a few crows along it too but no i knew what i was after and i wasn't going to change tactics,

on reaching the end of the hedge i thought a sit down and time for some refreshment's,

while eating my lunch the rain stopped and it became quite nice so i waited 20 minutes then strolled back,

2 and a half hours later i fired no shots off got soaked to the skin covered in mud me and cloth's but had a great day out loved it and as for the said quarry i had not stalked for at least a year well i picked 1000's of the little critter's

Sounds ideal Colin , well apart from the getting wet bit , and the getting muddy bit , and the not shooting anything is not great come to think of it

Nice blackberrys though , is that a personal best punnet :)

Colin, I think you also had a little chuckle to yourself didn't you as you were trudging through the mud? Yes, you were planning this post and took a photo of the gun with the quarry in that kind of Macho, look at the big beasty I just nailed. We can see them on that bush by your gun. You are an outrageous show off and trophy hunter aren't you?

lol i guess i could of moved over a field or two for the pigeons but i only went for some blackberries thought i would take the gun in the off chance of a bolting rabbit,

just while i was out i thought i would take a pic and do a write up lol

was going to line all the berries up like in the pics with big bags of pigeon but there was way too many

Nice write up Colin,

I did similar the other day, ended up eating loads of blackberries and forgetting to shoot the pigeons coming over me, and ended up with only 3, but then a while batch of blackberries, a tummy ache and 2 baskets of elderberries to make wine with :-). The feeling of trying to quickly shove some carts in the gun for a pigeon but prioritising getting a blackberry in mouth...
