  1. i've got an oldish 77k which has silencer on it - easy enough to fit - i think it has a couple of grub screws down the side - i don't know if they are currently available to buy though. I can't even look because my gun seems to have migrated round a friends where he uses it to keep the squirrels and rabbits at bay in his garden ! ring round a few places for the latest option cg
  2. silly poll. stuartp is right. You 'tool up' for what's most likely on offer and then keep within your capabilites. Your average syndicate shoot is not likely to bare much resemblence to a commercial shoot on hilly ground, and anyway, of those answering the poll, how optimistic are some in their judgement of distance. I believe the basc (?) did an interesting survey/test on a cross section of shooters and the results were quite astonishing as to thier perception of distance. I'd say 30-40yds is sporting (then i shoot .410) and kill the majority of my targets, i might push another couple of yards, but the angles and kill zone offered have to be just right - see - thinky thinky about killing the target - over this, or not just right and it can fly by. Yep, maybe i could hit it, but then it's a long slog with your dog - and i find it embarrasing to watch others clearly shooting out of range of either their gun /cart combination or their own capabilities, and pricked birds are a poor result for all concerned. Did Digweed not take a crew pigeon shooting with heavy loads and big shot and consistently kill long rangers ?Someone ask him. i do not know why i have even written this i think i'll stick with first comment. SILLY POLL !
  3. yep i read that as well hugh fearnly whibble whats his face - youd think he wouldn't be such a porker chasing all that food around. Anyway young rooks maybe, i guess theyv'e only eaten regurgitated grubs'n stuff. As a solitary bird i do not think i could get near enough crows to shoot a family sized portion. 4 and twenty blackbirds refers to blackbirds i believe - an old guy once explained to me how they used to go on organised blackbird shoots on boxing day (this was about 20yrs ago and he was about 85 then !) so date it from there - i am sure there must game books around to verify this. anyone tried crispy fried rat tail with sweet chillie dip ? cg
  4. well done for taking the time to do this cg
  5. um - so generally from this you can assume that with a 12bore you can kill effectively from between 60 - 80yds ?- good luck ! or is it 20 - 25yds with .410 ? my calculator battery has run dry. cg
  6. i am with richie 223 exactly my thoughts cg
  7. i don't think there has been a cull '40 somethings ' (42 here) we are probably mostly tucked up in bed, finally got the kids to sleep, work in the morn - yawn - yawn bloody yawn remember you young'uns maybe have college, school or naff all or if lucky some shooting. The REALLY old ones are retired, dribbled off to sleep, and some of them who've missed this poll tonight will miss it forever'cos they ain't going to wake up tomorrw. that's cheery isn't it hang on i might be moving into the 'miserable old ***' category here cg
  8. boomstick 1. 20 will normally shoot a bit tighter than a 12. 20 will generally be lighter (and therefore swing quicker) than 12. But as per henry, if you shoot heavy loads (ie 28g + or VERY fast cart) you will probably suffer from recoil 2. what you hunt with a 12 you can pretty much hunt with a 20 - the range of cartridges are there - you just need to be a little more accurate. Can't give opinion on 28g because never had one - seen some good shots using them very well, but why they put 28g of lead through them i cannot understand - ouch ! through a 5lb s/s that must hurt. Only real advantage of smaller calibre is reduced recoil and noise if used with appropriate cartridge + YOU CAN FIT LOADS OF CARTRIDGES IN YOUR POCKET ! 3.Favorite caliber - .410 shot all my game for last 8 years with browning o/u 28'' m/c full + full More of a challenge - makes you think - but for me makes me shoot better. Brought enjoyment back to the sport. Many shooters go back to the smaller gauges later on - but confidence is key. Note though the range of cart for .410 is fairly limited, and although you can shoot your regular game at regular distances you have to really be 'on em', and, you will not be out wildfowling with one ! cg
  9. cheers - my mate has one - swears by it aswell. cg
  10. bullet boy - looks like your sitting on 1x each of the most popular pcp hunters (except the hw100), but which is your fav package and why ? maybe wrong to compare fac rapid, but for quality, reliability and consistency they all must have a pecking order ? that's a few £ to find out the long way. cg
  11. oh -water in the eyes - that ol chestnut - that's why you missed the long'uns !
  12. boring now - this is not going anywhere - but when your angry you want some redress - even an apology - but lets get life into perspective ! do you know i spent 2 yrs taking an a##hole to court because he did not do what he said in the first place - fine - he lied - he was wrong - court said i was right - cost me money - did not get an apology, or the money back ! hey great thing principles, but at least i walk around without a MASSSIVE chip on my shoulder getting angry about little things, and do you know what, the bloke's still an a##hole that's for sure. cg
  13. sounds like you need to be able to afford a range rover with private plates to be able to afford to shoot the targets aswell !
  14. maybe i'm a little green on this site, but the tittle tattle going on the 'for sale' forum is quite interesting. Yep as a 'member' you can review another members previous postings, so where someone is previously looking for gun auctions then subsequently has regular guns to sell - um - 2+2 = 5 maybe ? to be fair we are all experts at making judgements and opinions with only partial facts, and a whole bunch of assumptions. So, like any purchase in life - 'you pays your money and take the chance' - so if you are lucky enough to see something you like AND can afford then why not, sure as heck we'd all know pretty quick if something was dodgy ! uming and arring on selling my gun, but when they're gone they're gone and some are just special ! ps i do not know any of the individuals who have been posting, so have no axe to bare. cg
  15. bet a quid someone has tried doing it. mind you, if you loaded a shell with a single lump of stem ginger shaped accordingly it would be pretty lethel ! Rabbit and ginger sounds nice.
  16. no doubt by now you've had a look around at what's available £prices are varied to say the least - have a chat with a local shooting ground (see BASC coaches) there are loads of options on the types of cartridges available now which might make you consider a different route (ie 20b with light trainer cartridges) You might get a better choice. Personally i've always fancied a 28, but like many o/u.410 (i have one - brilliant and deadly) they are built on 20b actions so can be deceptively heavy. Keep your mind open until you make the choice, but whatever, consider you use some of the lightest cartridges avail for that calibre at least for the first few outings. Comfort is the first objective, else the money would be wasted anyway. You can always make the targets easier, but you cannot stop the reflex flinch once the recoil has taken it's toll. cg

i see you are in derby, not local to me, but ring round a few engineering shops and ask if they can measure your barrels / chokes. all you need to say is its a bore approx 8mm diameter and about 40mm deep, nothing fussy. Look for some one with jig boring facilities, they'll have the kit - alternatively go to a gunshop - they'll measure for free !! cg
  18. sure i've got one tucked away somewhere if u can't get hold of one - good book - problem is, my dog couldn't read! come back if you still need and i'll have a dig around cg
  19. got a 20b 325 forend kicking around somewhere (v slight damage grd 5 wood) cg
  20. technically you are correct, to achieve the full and full the same it meant light mod and full chokes into the specific barrells - they did not shoot the same when switched. however of the 3 brands of cart shot the differences were negligibbllle whichever barrel shot from - so, experience wins over technibabble sometimes. if the comment was unhelpful for the guy who originally had the q on 20b shells then sorry ! but also, how many shooters with fixed chokes have sat in their hide twiddling with their barrel selector because 'ooh this ones needs some choke !?' cg
  21. clayman is right - no doubt. confidence is key. save your money and your shoulder, put it in the right place and it will kill. having gone from a 12 to a twenty 27yrs ago my wife bought me a lovely .410 o/u 8yrs ago which i have used for nearly all my game shooting since, and guess what, 18grams of eley no.6 is enough for most targets, the main limitations on a shooting day are your own capabilities. I shoot full and full choke to make sure, and my 20 is briley choked full and full (and to make sure it has been done on apattern plate so both barrels shoot the same , so, pretty much the cartridge choice becomes almost irrelevant ), 24/25grams of no.6 (not too hard shot) with smooth powder will do the deal. express and gamebore std loads are just fine, hull's and cts are too spikey compared to the extra downrange hit. If you are unsure, watch someone else shoot your gun with the different cartridges on clays, and see if the results are the same as when you shoot. Good luck, whatever you choose, but if you find yourself carrying different cartridges for different drives or targets then you are doomed . oh yes, make it fibre ! cg
  22. yep, std practice i think when trying to reduce the numbers. It takes twice as long to stop than to shoot another one. But do we really need to see the pics - we all know what a rifle can do - the messiest ive seen is a .253 on a fox @ 15 yds chest on, but it was dead, so the end deal is the same. Come on, this humour is for your private friends. cg
  23. seems quick to me, just registered aswell. am i sad, lonley, or just a daft *** who is going to dribble on ? know what the wife thinks ! by the way going duck shooting on tuesday, can taste it already.
  24. ooh, not much in it, but the .410 has loads more killing power cg
