  1. I could be 100% sure that me shooting though my 32inch barrels at a given target at say between 35 and 45 yards would have more pellets in the kill zone equals pigeon not a bit of card .It maybe only 1 or 2 but that extra pellets but 1 or 2 pellets extra would give me more chance of killing the bird on average than a shooter shooting though 26 or 28 inch barrels.

So the diffrents maybe small in terms of figures but in the field it could mean the diffrents in downing the bird of winging it to limp to a tree and die a sad last moments which I why I try to kill birds cleanly and using longer barrels works for ME.

  2. I done my AMTRA course at bicton with some mole valley workers all welsh guys and girls.

Ever time the lecturer ask what the symptons of sid illness all they kept saying was S""tarse we wet ourselves ever time.

It really summed up the brain cells of them lot,not that all workers of said company are the same I am sure.

    Regards OTH

  3. I have found it varys some much even within the course of the day but I agree with Will comments.

But yesterday I found just bouncers and no whirly was best the field has been shot hard with birds wary and flaring all the time.

So flat out as a rule of thumb .

    Regards OTH

  4. Rape tends to be within 3 days old cutting then they will turn to wheat/barley as the times goes by.

On on rare occasions they will turn back in two weeks to green rape very rare IMO.

So OSR is in favour at the moment in my area.

    Regards OTH

  5. Alan out of intrest what would you like to pay or was expecting to pay . :good: .

As a former full time brickie during the 1990s I can tell you £120 is great price and the two days for £300 is way over .

As said before pillers are not the easest or hardest thng to do but it aint no down the line work.

If you do it yourself or get some bodger to do it make sure they use febmix or simliar makes a world of diffrents.

Here a picture of some work I done it a bit dusty due to rain splash.

    Regards OTH

  6. I am amused by the reaction a simple subject generates I am not a expert on this subject have any of you got any former expert knowledge of ballistics :good: .

So I base my replies and answers on field work eg shooting at pigeons on wide and vary distance from 20 yards to 50 yards .

I tried some 7.5s yesterday and found them good for the decoyed birds but the flighters at distance they only winged them on average :good: no good in any shooter opinion .

Also I find it odd that a couple of the poster saying 7.5s are plenty good enough where not in the top flight of north vs south hodnet shoot.

And by the way since this thread has started I have shot over 700 birds with 6s now thats what I call knowlegde on subject .

6s are best either 28/30/0r 32s grams fact not opinion for trying kill as many birds cleanly without injurying at the varied angles and distances presented on any given day .

    Kind regards OTH

  7. Once again carrying on from last weeks good sport I tried a pea stubble that had birds on it all summer but due to the crop I had not shot on the farmer request .

The birds where pouring in when I arrived I setup in the wrong place first and a quick change I was in the hotspot .

The birds streamed in for first two hours but then eased off .

Then at 1800hrs the farmer turned up with the baler to bale the pea straw and knocked the flight on the head .

Packed up with 104 the birds are back after my concern over lack off birds generally .

    Cheers OTH

  8. 7 and half's accounted for over 150 odd pigeons last week and 90odd crows/rooks tonight, so you can poke your snide comments about us only *spooking* them where the sun don't shine. :good:

Touchie old boy I replied to a question that asked for my opinion of why I get regular largeish bags, its not having a pop I know that some dont like my replys on this subject and some agree with me I live with it you shuld live with it .

Its my opinion its not snide I am trying to guide a younger member to help with a problem not bagging many pigeons.

Only 17 years old young grasshopper much to learn and respect of the older ones

    Kind regards OTH

  9. Went back to the recently cut rape fields yesterday having set-up for a couple of hours the day before shhoting 10.

Up nice and early, all set up at 8am having stood and watched good numbers dropping in from trees and an emerging flightpath. Shot 3 birds in first 15 minutes and as planning to be there for the day, questioning if have brought enough carts!

Then nothing! Not a bird in the sky. Waited and waited. Tryed all the tricks, cup of coffee, toilet stop, even sending a text message. Told myself that if nothing about by midday, would call it quits when bang-on 12 noon, a bird from nowhere dropped into my pattern from way up high. Then another, groups of three and four and so on until 2pm when again it stopped just as suddenly as it had started. It was almost as if they were given 2 hours for lunch and that was that!

Ended up with 34 from 50 shots and left at 3pm. Anyone else finding such rigid feeding times? :shoot:

Too early in one sense and too late in another.

Right first of all whats time is sunrise at the moment around 0445 hrs I have seen birds feeding at that time an they tend to have a couple of quick hrs feed.

Now last night I shoot from 1800hrs right up till sunset at 2100 hrs .

So it not rigid its just the birds using all the daylight at key times .

    Hope this helps OTH

  10. your stubble looks a little shorter than mine. do you pups get on all right with it simon?

mine havent been in rape stub and im a little worried about sending the box of frogs in.

oh and wheres the blue boxes? are those just birds from your last outing and you just turns the truck around for a differant photo.hehe.

your getting them there kidda. pants around here at moment, think i shot them all.

    Phil.

    Phil

The dogs are not keen on the rape stubble but if you have got a over keen pup its brillant for slowing them down and making them walk to heel etc.

The reason that rape is cut high with long stubble is due to the steams being green from either no desacation or the farmer trying to cut it before the 14 days after spraying .

    Regards Simon

  11. OTH,think about 40 yrs ago was only 1970 trap and skeet came before english sporting, opps I forgot its National sporting now. Obtw my old man was born and bred in Wiltshiremaybe we are related.I ######g hope not. Cheers Barry.

    Hi Barry

If your surname is Chuckle we could be related I have also got a big moustache have you :good:

    Cheers OTH

  12. After a couple of 100s this week tried a late evening foray on some more OSR stubble .

I didnt reach the field till 1800 hrs but a hundred birds lifted so gave it a crack and birds did not show till last thing and made for a hectic 45 mins .

I had two helpers today not that there keen on rape stubble .

Finnshed with 25 out again tommorrow with a old ex service mate will keep you posted .

    Kind regards OTH

  13. Not all of us muppets using 7.5 trap loads spook them. IVe decoyed for over 40 yrs using trap loads and shoot as many as my mates using 32 no 6s. In fact ive used skeet/trap no 9s to good effect at close birds with very little meat damage.

I knew it would take long to get a bite.

40 years where trap loads about then  .

    Kind regards OTH

  14. I like to think off this subject that there are two types of shooters.

The ones with little or no knowlegde of shooting 1000s of pigeons over 15/20 years who know very little about the diffrents between using 28 grams of 7.5s though 26 /28 inch barrels and 32 grams of 6s though 32 inch barrels.

The second is the shooters who have shot 1000s of pigeons over the years who know what there on about not somebody who shoots a few rounds a week .

    Keep it up boys OTH

  15. is there any secret to getting big bags?

Yes time effort and having the contacts to have plenty of permissions to allow for for the birds not to be pressured by ever Tom ****""d in the coutry shooting at pigeons with 7.5s clay cartridges spooking the hell out of them.

I could go on but I am lucky I have the job that allows my work to work around shooting and I can recce the birds within working day.

    Keep at it OTH

  16. After a good evening on some laid spring barley on monday 122 in just under 5 hours.

Got a phone call from a farmer to say he had managed to cut some OSR and the birds where hammering it.

So got to field at 1430hrs on wensday and he was right the only problem due to horses at one end I can only shoot the other not so favoured end.

But still had a good day even though the birds flightline was off the other end of the wood and if I had been that end would have for certain reached 200.

But finnished up with 112 in the picture and picked up 12 picked up by merlin from the woods after picking up the birds on the stubble.

Dont forget if using your dog or dogs to take water for them.

I have got two more day penciled in for this week friday and sat and all looks good for some more top shooting .

    Cheers OTH

  17. Just tell her the field has been sprayed with gramoxone weedkiller and tell her to take her dogs to the vets ASAP.

Graxmoxone has been banned to be used but a bit of bluffing usally works it put a stop to some problems I had with a simlary situation.

Or you know her address do as said report it to a police or pick up some of her dog poo and post it back to her free of charge with out any postage she will get a charge card from the royal mail see will think she has got a prezzies .

    Regards OTH

  18. No defined answer to this Lez shoot it when it feels right not when other say so.

Also they are forgeting the biggest threat eg farmer gikles and his plough/discs .

Its all very well saying leave 3/4days then to discover it been knocked in.

And the main thing for me if the birds are flighting over the field naturally it makes no diffrents if they are feeding you put deeks out they will come.

As there are greedy social birds and spot the deeks .

    Cheers OTH

  19. Those numbers are big, at 10,000, that equates to 27 birds EVERY day of the year, that takes some doing!! :good:

This year has been my worst by some margin I am only in the 3500 mark with only 5 months to go I cant quite see me doing the 8 .

My records I had a peak in 1997 when one 10 acre pea field from drilling to be plough in accounted for 4500 .

There was a time that I shot the filed three times in a week and had over 1000 birds in those three days .

Its a shame as it was before my intrest in sharing my experience and shooting when I was a greedy youngster and wanted to keep it all for myself .

The birds on my land have not reached those dizzy levels for the last 4/5 years with 100 bird bags decreaseing year on year.

    Kind regards OTH
