  1. I could be wrong but I think I've heard somwhere that if you have been declined a certificate it would work against you if you re-apply. Hopefully someone else might know more about this. If it's as suspected, it might be wise to stay with 12ftlb air rifles for a while till you can show you have become a much better person... depending of couse on the type of conviction you have.
  2. Cheers webber, good read there mate. Lest anyone thinks otherwise, this is not a bash the police or BASC whilst bigging up SACS thread. I do believe BASC is - and has been very good for shooters in this country. However, in this PC/anti age where so many people are unsupportive of our shooting to the point of doing something to cause us hindrance, I feel very exposed and unprotected. I feel it prudent to have legal defence insurance for my shooting interests, and not just while out shooting. I’m also a taxi driver, an ageing one at that: What happens to my certificate if some drunken thug decides to fill me in because he feels he should get his taxi for free? Or I have an RTA with some bully who thinks it’s ok to drive like a lunatic and drops me saying it was his fault? I think I’m correct in saying that anyone getting into an altercation risks loss, or suspension, of his ticket - depending on the whim of his issuing force chief constable or firearms dept staff? If I have to defend myself I’m in a lose/lose situation. I would have thought BASC, with its proportionally massive funding would have mandatory legal support for its members. It’s a shame that I must now seek legal protection elsewhere. My dilemma is that there seems no BASC membership option that is cheaper without their public liability cover now that I have applied to join up with SACS.
  3. I'd hazard a guess there's quite a few of these winged vermin shot on the quiet near seaside towns where they cause misery for some folk. There won't be many admit it openly though. For every person who thinks they are a wondrous sight and sound that is part of living near the shore, there's someone else who's property has been scat on, and the racket they make don't help a light sleeper. That they frequently scavenge in tips and other unhealthy rat infested places then settle on our resevoirs makes me cringe at what filth could be lurking in mans water supply system or the beaches kids play on.
  4. Cheers Lee. Yup - they just kept coming out, we reckoned "at least 50" as a score in about three hours, and tough too. We were very surprised at how many there were, but the massive bunker type shed had recently been cleared out leaving them very exposed. They don't stop for very long though so we had to be quick, maybe a tin of catfood mushed up next time methinks. Most of them were shot from the comfort of my Pinin, using the headlights for a lamp. I think Lee was very surprised at the concept of right hooker shooting off the nearside passenger door window. If any of you have never tried this and don't have a roll over cheekpiece on the butt give it a whirl. Anyone thinking about giving Lee an opportunity will find him a darn nice chap - and he was ready to go before the agreed time. He's got one of those chukles when he scores a good hit that lets you know he's having fun.
  5. The main gains are greater power delivery with a flatter trajectory - which makes for a more reliable and humane kill. A lesser gain is that it extends the potential range somewhat. Would you like to compare your 12ftlb to my FAC one with a bit of ratting? We have a new ratting permision to try out Do you work shifts?
  6. Classic sign of a shop running down stock prior to closing down... or worse if their supplier ain't wanting to talk with them. Demand a refund methinks - and visit the place if possible.
  7. "fleabag" on here got a gunsafe custom made for his Pajero by a firm in Leicester - not a million miles from south Derby's.
  8. If the farmer is ok with leaving them there then so be it, it's vermin control. Bunnies and fox don't pay much attention to a vehicle until someone gets out of it to pick up. At least they won't be digging any more holes or eating any of his grass or crop, and other wildlife gets the bounty. Our best nights were 119, 93 and 70 odd. Those nights would have been much less productive if we stopped to pick up. Can't see the point of showing the grisly guts but each to their own.

    is it me

    Quote button don't work
  10. Divided we fall has been said on this thread: I'm thinking that if people could work out their differences better there would be fewer breakaways in almost every organisation going. Take forum's for example, how many people feel a particular stance causes members to start an alternative. Together we have a stronger presence. Tam, this is very worrying, and makes me feel that I have done the right thing, thats two current court cases forum and BASC members have SACS defending them in court? I've only had my FAC for three years but until recently felt safe in the knowledge that BASC would be there for me if needed. I wonder if there are any more instances where members needed more help than BASC were giving.
  11. In my job as a private hire car driver I pick up an old boy from the renal unit of our local hospital. He lives quite close to the unit so we don't get to chat much, but last time I picked him up he asked what I do on my nights off. Well it turns out he likes Rabbit but hasn't had any for over 30 years so I offered to drop a couple of cleaned out ones off for him. He said thanks but no thanks because he'd never skinned one - and neither had I, but I'd watched fleabag do it to take it for one of his guards dog. I was expecting to get bloody but didn't. Was also expecting the meat to feel slippery but because it's fat free it didn't. Anyone thinking it feels horrible need not worry - it was really dry as you can be and I just wiped my hands on their coats then finished with wet grass. I'd told him and his wife to look out for a carrier bag hanging on their front door handle - it's got three in it. He's not long for this world now but I hope he enjoys them.

Best nobody replies to this so he keeps it at 2000 for a while
  14. I have seen reference to one that fits through the roof but can't seem to find it now. Here's another option: clicky here
  15. You make a good point Webber, and it would be good if they made it clear rather than intimate it might be there. I cant reiterate enough though how vulnerable some of us townies (if you like) feel when someone calls the police because our activities don't seem agreeable to them. The police have to investigate: Well they agree they have to if it's likely that the person being investigated is cooperative at least. We all know how some officers don't have a clue what they're doing with firearm callouts - look at that "Badger shot in Cornwall" thread... "it looks like a bullet" - and thats from a wildlife officer. Who's advice should I have complied with in the instance I have refered to in this thread, an officer that shoots and was adamant I was acting unlawfully - or my own non shooting FEO's? I personally think he was talking out of his depth and just trying to look good in front of his buddy who was sympathetic, but who knows? The cheif superintendant wanted all the dots on the "i"s and the tops on the "T". DavidBASC had also got the BASC firearms team to advise me on the safekeeping of Chris's guns - which more or less mirrored what we had done. After the scary incident their advice differed though, possibly as a result of "pressure bearing component" laws changing. We tread in a minefield of different practices between force area's. I was kacking it but didn't complain to my local force in case they revised their position and took it out on my brother and I, or a big row occurred between the three forces with us as the prize? Either way we look at it, if BASC had this funding available for members court defences they ought and surely would use it to attract or retain membership. EDIT: It could be that I'm being over pedantic, but maybe I'm quite unique in that I shoot with my brother in Devon and Cornwall force area's a few times a year, and my brother often shoots in Leicester force area... but they got different rules of what we can and cannot do. Further, living on the eastern border of Leicester, most of my/our permissions are in Northampton force's area.
  16. So do you want a lamp to fit to the Jimny - or to fit to the rifle? Are you likely to lamp on foot at all? If so a lightforce might get in the way or keep getting knocked off "zero"
  17. Reed, I'm curious about the 17HMR not passing on your permission. It's a smaller caliber than .22 so certainly should be passed for it already. And most firearms dept's consider a safer alternative. I'd check that before you rule out a rifle mate.
  18. Thanks all, it looks like this is about done now. I've downloaded and sent off my SACS enrolment form with my card details. I'm undecided at this time whether I'll renew my BASC, given some of the fee is going towards public liability inurance I will have with SACS. I do feel that BASC is a good voice for us in England, and is the one best known by English farmers who's land I shoot on: But they seem to have missed the boat in terms of support if the brown stuff hits the fan for any of us. I might instead make a small donation, similar to the SACS fee towards their good work in more general terms.
  19. Yes Reed, the RFD records the sale on your certificate - and notifies your firearms department. I have bought 5000 rounds of ammo in the three years since I got my FAC and it's reasonable for them to assume I have used most of it. With no reports of bullets or bullet holes being found where they shouldn't be, the firearms unit can assume I have acted responsibly with the firearm: They also now consider me capable of deciding what is a safe shot or not with the experience I have gained using all that ammunition.
