  1. thanks again guys. it seems the hornet is exactly what i need in my situation. a round that will cleanly kill a fox out to around 100 yards, rarely a little more, and usually a bit closer. is fairly quiet, and has less chance of overpenetration than some of the other fox calibres. there are good grassy hills as backstops and my shooting position is higher up aiming down at their usual run which is on soft ground. although i know the larger calibres are probably more usefull in most situations, i just don't really see the need for one on this small bit of land. and also the amount of ammunition i would be using would be fairly small, once zeroed., a few sighting in shots once at the land and the odd sneaky fox. by the way my force do state the .22 hornet as the smallest acceptable fox round.
  2. thanks for the quick replies guys, i just thought it would be a sensible choice as the .223 might be a bit overkill at those ranges. plus want to minimise overpenetration as much as possible, due to the proximity of the hens. plus i thought it might be more likely to get cleared on the land.
  3. hi guys, im just filling out my fac forms for my first grant and as my local constabulary dont allow rimfire as a fox tool im thinking of a .22 hornet. dont really want to go bigger as the land it is to be used on is only around 16 acres, the tererain is undulating with good soft backstops and in a rural area surrounded by farmland. how effective as a fox calibre is the .22 hornet? will be mainly at ranges up to 100 yards, probably closer near the chicken pens. cheers guys.

    Bsa ultra

id agree with the weirauch mod being much better, i use one on mine. great little rifle by the way.
  5. well it wouldn't matter, young child, pensioner, nutter with an axe, the mighty akita will sort them out! ...traditionally though akitas prefer larger game so would probably leave the child mauling to the collies and labs!
  6. you need one of these mate....

    TDR Ultra?

i dont think that would be legal mate. as without a butt the ultra would then (in the eyes of the law) a 12ftlb pistol. all of the tdr i can think of like the gunpower stealth/storm etc and to an extent the loguns16. have a detatchable butt that doubles up as the air cylinder so therefore can't fire without it. i have an ultra atm and with the moderator removed it fits nicely into the new bsa bag which looks more like a rucksack than a gunslip.
  8. hi guys, im selling my adult male common boa constrictor. he is fully grown and just over 6 foot long. he is a proven male and sired 20 healthy young earlier this year. excellent feeder on rats, quail, guinnea pigs and small rabbits. he is soppy tame and has never shown any sign of aggression. no setup is included as he is housed in a stack of vivs. any questions please feel free to pm me! oh and im in birmingham and price is £100 heres a pic of the handsome lad...
  9. it wasnt that bad... most of them can't shoot! lol has anyone ever had any problems getting a .223 on issue of a new license?
  10. ha, im sure ill be fine, i can talk for england! am ex forces (not that it matters) but at least have had some formal safety/handling/marksmanship training. plus have been hunting with air rifles for a while now.
  11. that sounds good! i'm not too worried about the process or the interview etc, id just like to know what to expect. im from birmingham. how about you?
  12. hey guys im about to apply for my fac and was wondering if anyone has any experience with west mids police? how long does the process take? are they likely to decline or slap a mentoring condition on a .223 for fox? and any other info or experiences would be great, thanks. i'm applying for .22lr with mod for vermin and some range use. and .223 with mod for fox and also zeroing on range. ammo im thinking 400 to buy, 500 to keep in .22 (including expanding) and 100 to buy 150 to keep in .223 (including expanding) i think that sounds reasonable.... any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated, cheers
  13. id agree with what has been said, i have an ultra in .22 and its a cracking little gun! try some different pellets and see what it likes, mine is pellet on pellet at 25 yards with superdomes or jsb exacts, but **** with any bsa pellets. has taken rabbits out to 50 yards no problem at all, and has always been a reliable gun for me.
  14. im under west mids mate, looks like i might have to apply for a centerfire then. how likely am i to get centerfire on my first ticket?
  15. yea, i'm guessing it can vary a lot between forces. i have been told mine are usually pretty fair as long as you fit the requirements and are sensible.
  16. was going to ring anyway, he has had shooters on there in the past but no one for a few years now, and im not sure what they were using
  17. hi guys, im now applying for my FAC after shooting air rifles for a few years now. am a member of basc and a good shooting club etc, and have a few good permissions. my question is what are the minimum requirements for the land to be cleared for rimfire? the land in question is just over 16 acres surrounded by more farmland, and a motorway about a mile away (as the crow flies). there are lots of rabbits and the odd fox so im thinking .17 hmr for long range rabbit in the day and the occasional fox and .22 rf for close range rabbits and lamping. i know it may vary between forces but generally is that enough space for rimfire to be granted? also does anyone know if west midlands police allow .17 hmr as a fox calibre? thanks guys.
  18. high mate, not to jump on you here but i am currently in the process of applying for my fac. i have been using airguns since i was around 14 for both targets and hunting. i have gained as many permissions as i can and through being safe and curteous managed to hold on to them. i am a member of a rifle club, and a member of basc. as well as having some experience with the firearms i wish to use i served in the armed forces and have no criminal record. if you really want to get a fac then do your research, get some experience and be patient. unless you can justify having one i.e club shooting or vermin control over approved land you will not be issued your fac.
  19. not sure about guinnea pigs but i have never had any problems introducing a new puppy to other pets, as long as it is done gradually and the dogs are under control. i do know that my snakes love guinnea pigs though...
  20. yes they are a good value for money scope, i got a brand new nikko stirling platinum nighteater for £30 from a car boot last week and it is an amazing scope. well chuffed for 30 quid! now need a .17 hmr to put it on! to beat them you are looking at spending hundreds!

    Dogs

its a shame for the child and their family but people need to realise any dog can bite and regardless of breed or temperament dogs are not babysitters. i don't have children but i try to ensure my dogs are well socialised (under supervision of course) but you can never be too careful.
  22. a friend of mine uses a half empty box of matches, apparently quite effective.
  23. ha, doubt there would be much of a bird left if he bothered to retrieve it. ... although im sure he would be capable of taking down a deer (i know highly illegal) they were used to hunt big game in japan.
  24. it really is sad that we have to go to such measures to try and deter thieves nowadays! but personally i say you need one of these... ... and a sign asking any intruders to remove any watches or jewelery as the dog cant digest them!
  25. i have used these with my air rifle, and they are great fun and surprisingly loud!
