  1. I discovered this tip just recently, please take notes if you wish. 1. Hold onto your license until the last minute before renewal in the belief that the auction you've been waiting for, for the last 2 months will have that treasured English sbs you've been after, because after chat with local Firearms Dept. they confirm very long lead time for granting certs. so hold onto cert. for auction. 2. Find someone who can countersign your application at the last minute only to discover they have a very shaky past, ooooops. 3. Find someone else with not so shaky past, nobody springs to mind so off to mothers and have a chat with my mums husband who at 57 (I'm 43) is I suppose my Stepdad?. On discussing application with my new Stepdad he agrees to countersign application and photos. 4. FEO turns up at my house 2 days later quite annoyed, with my application in his hand, he states that legally I cannot be in possession of my shotguns as my license has now expired. He gives me the option of removing my guns into police custody until my renewal is granted or transfer the guns to another cert. holder there and then, I take the later option and phone the FEO later to confirm this has been done. 5. FEO notices name of countersignatory and expresses surprise that I know this person, brief explaination given and he states that this is not ideal. Now I begin to think this is all going to go horribly wrong. 6. 1 week later new cert. turns up with a message from the FEO via my Stepdad, who as it happens drinks with the FEO (found out he has known him for years), in his local, don't use my Stepdad to countersign and don't leave it so late next time. Now the FEO could have been a right jobsworth over this but he wasn't, how much my Stepdads friendship with him had to do with I'm not so sure, but all in all a great bloke.
  2. Bog Troll A particularly large dump, which refuses to go on it's travels round the 'U' bend and and just sits there looking at you, even after repeated thrashings from the loo brush he still sits there, for all the world to see, that you did it. Drink REAL ALE for a REAL HANGOVER
  3. Cheers magman will get along to the next one
  4. I could'nt get down to Southams but went to the Scotarms Auction at Newark Show Ground the week before and I must say a majority of what went through was overpriced rubbish, loads of various Baikals and single barrels but nothing of any worth. I was after a nice English sbs but most of them needed a lot of expensive work so came home empty handed . Any idea how often Southams hold their sales?
  5. I can personally recommend Simon the resident Gunsmith at Doveridge Shooting Ground, I just had my barrels re-blued, new firing pin and full strip down and clean (which I enjoyed thoroughly ). 2 weeks from start to finish and a quality job. Plus, he's a nice friendly bloke who did a minor repair on my friend's auto for nothing
  6. Spot on George just been on their website, will trying out their other brews. Cheers
  7. I was in my local on Friday night drinking a gem of a real ale called "Sneck Lifter" but I can't remember who actually brewed it, dark, strong 5.1% and extremely tasty, altogether a cracking pint, wish I could remember who the brewer was so I could look out for their other wares.
  8. Just recently bought a Denton & Kenell SBS myself, box lock non ejector 28" barrels, straight English stock, by all accounts a nicely made gun, fits me a treat. Just in the process of having the barrels re-blued. It's not English made but Spanish and according to the good members on this site the quality can vary from poor to good as they were only finished in the UK with bought in parts from Spain. The general consensus is not to pay to much for them. Search on the forum and view the previous posts and then make up your own mind. My honest opinion is that it's a better quality gun than my Ugartchea SBS which I also bought recently.
  9. Cheers for the info Baldrick, I'm glad Watson Bros. has been revived they used to make some stunning guns in days gone buy. http://www.watsonbrosgunmakers.com/Home.htm for anybody who want's to have a look
  10. If you've got time on your hands take a look at some of the best gunmakers in the world. http://www.hollandandholland.com/home.htm http://www.westleyrichards.com/ http://www.purdey.com/ http://www.bossguns.co.uk/index1.asp Unfortunately it looks as if William Powell no longer make guns and EJ Churchill's website won't load so not sure about them. And in recognition of Scotland's fine gunmaking heritage view the following: http://www.dicksonandmacnaughton.com/thecompany/index.html Happy viewing
  11. I absolutely adore Grandad out for a drive on a clear, bright, windless day (on motorways, A Roads, B roads, etc) and still won't exceed 30mph, everybody backs up behind him and then take it in turns to kill themselves trying to get past as he swerves all over the place and brakes for no apparent reason.
  12. I've got a Investarm folding 20 bore single barrel with a broken firing pin you can have for free as I need to get it off my ticket to make way for another sbs. If anybody want's a free gun it yours but you will have to collect it.
  13. After recently selling my semi and going over to a sbs non-ejector I'm begining to question whether ejectors are really that useful. When I'm clay pigeon shooting it's so much easier to pop the spent cartridges into the buckets as opposed to my semi spewing them all over the place and then picking them up afterwards. So do they warrant the extra premium charged for ejectors?
  14. I just love English side by sides, as they are rather unfashionable now, you can get a beautifully made gun for a lot less than a new o/u, which will last for years. I just find them so enjoyable to shoot and would dearly love to own a classic Holland & Holland, Purdey, Boss & Co. etc but unfortunately I would find all my personal belongings on the front lawn if I came home with one.
  15. I just don't get PNPs maybe it's an aid to finding your car when you come out of Tecsos and your unsure if you've found the right one.
  16. Whoops, only paid £50 for it though, but it actually seems a well put together gun, compared to the Urgarchtea I've got.
  17. Does anyone have any information on these guns, besides being made in Spain, I'm trying to track down the importer or if indeed they are still imported. Any snippets would be greatly appreciated.
  18. Have I missed something? I did'nt realise a section of our fellow shooters were that different to the rest of us, maybe when one of our colleagues decides to use a semi his personality changes and becomes a danger to everyone around him, except when he uses his sbs or o/u of course.
  19. Maybe we could use all the windfarms as dual purpose, just a long shot, like grinding wheat, oops sorry somebody already done it, what's the name, ermm, got it - a Windmill.
